Sitting at 46-42 here on the 4th of July. 1.5 games behind San Diego for the 3rd Wild Card spot. 4th in the NL Central, 7 games behind the Cubs in first.

Impressive win over the Phillies today. Bats showed up, Marte is back in the lineup now. Ashcraft activated too. Now to get HG healthy for the 2nd half.

^Going to need more than that in the pen to make a playoff push. I trust Pagan and Suter. Santillan has been fair but scared me in the 8th yesterday with the bases loaded jam. Bullpen had to pick up 5 2/3 innings in Game 1 yesterday. They need some innings out of Lodolo today. Burns Sunday at this stage of his career early on, there are going to be some ups and downs.

Greene says he is feeling good, throwing a simulated bullpen session today. Depending on how that goes, the next step could be a rehab assignment next week.

IF Greene returns to form, seems one starter goes to pen & most marginal guy there gets demoted. That starter should strengthen pen to my weak mind. Of course Burns could flame out & be sent down.

That makes sense to me, and I like that approach. At this point, Singer and Martinez seem to be the most likely candidates. Martinez is a team player and has already stepped up with two recent relief appearances. While Martinez has been the more impactful pitcher overall of the two, we know he can easily transition to the bullpen if the Reds need him there. Should the Reds make the postseason, Francona can use his strengths like the Padres did giving them multiple innings out of the bullpen in October.

The durability of Suter, Richardson, Ashcraft, and one of those starting pitchers helps keep the bullpen fresh. I forgot to mention Sam Moll earlier. Played a huge role out of the bullpen since the trade with the A's. Now that Moll is healthy again, those two scoreless innings he pitched coming off the IL at Fenway show that he can still be a reliable arm in the pen.

Burns was much better today. 4 2/3, 1 run. 7 K's. Allowed only 2 hits, but 4 BB. That needs to come down.

Reds really need to find themselves a legit option in the 8th inning as a setup man to hold steady in these close games. Santillan gives up the 2-run HR to Stott.

When does Lowder come back?
I would be surprised if he pitches this year now at the half way point, but that is just my opinion. Francona said at the time it was a significant oblique injury. Does not appear to be resuming baseball activities in the near future. This is the last status that addresses him and there was no real update on his rehab process.

Oh for Pete's sake, is he EVER going to be healthy? I guess with the AS break coming up, there is no reason to take a risk, but even so, is he made of porcelain?

Starting to wonder that too. Given how injury-prone Hunter Greene has been over his first four seasons, the development of young pitchers like Burns being available becomes even more important for the Reds. It actually makes me appreciate Martinez & Singer more for eating innings and staying healthy over the course of the season to take the load off the rest of the rotation. Greene’s success largely comes from the velocity of his fastball. If Greene can develop a smoother delivery without maxing out on every throw, pace himself, and effectively mix in his slider and changeup more often it will go a long way towards being more durable throughout the year. We've seen Nick Lodolo put in the work to refine his delivery and make the necessary adjustments to his grip after dealing with blisters. It has paid off for him and the Reds with his durability this season.

Byron Buxton when he is healthy, which he has been this year. That would absolutely help the Reds outfield defense and with the bat. Brings power, speed and defense.

Abbott made a strong case for All-Star consideration this year. He may still get there yet if pitchers opt out of the AS game.
They seem to think Abbott was just added to the All-Star Game on the broadcast with all of the high fives for Andrew coming his way after McLain's home run.

Nights like this are why the Reds need their ace Hunter Greene to toughen up and get in shape for the entire season. Marlins scored 7 runs on Martinez here in the 3rd.

Reds take the first two games after All-Star Break and win the series on the road vs the Mets. 5 games above .500.

That is awesome! As a Reds fan, knowing they won't ever be huge buyers at the deadline. This team is giving the front office no excuse to sell off this year.

Gonna be a lot of HRs to left field, unless they're putting up a higher wall.

Only 3rd time in MLB that both teams scored 8+ runs in the same one inning. But yes, Reds ( middle relief) sux.
