Was watching the SEC channel, and during a game break , the lead announcer asked what do you think of Cincinnati over Notre Dame for the CFP? The color analyst said I have to go with ND. The lead mentions, you know UC beat ND. Awkward silence ensued. The powers will edge out UC somehow, and say sorry just not enough on your resume and Herbie's eye test to vote you in.

If Cincy wins their CCG, they'll be in. That means Notre Dame will be out unless there are some upsets next weekend. There's no way the committee can put ND ahead of an undefeated Cincy given the head-to-head result. I can't recall a CCG weekend when there were so many possibilities.

B1G - Michigan wins, they're in. Michigan loses, no B1G team in playoff. Maybe.
SEC - Georgia is in no matter what. Alabama has to win to get in. Maybe.
Big XII - If OkSU wins the CCG they'll jump Notre Dame, if they haven't already. Then they'll be in the playoff. Maybe.
AAC - As noted, Cincy has to win to get in
Notre Dame - No CCG is a double edged sword. If OkSU wins, they jump idle ND.
ACC - Better luck next year
PAC - Better luck next year

If some upsets happen this could be the first year with a two loss team in the playoff. Alabama is the golden child so if they lose to Georgia they'd be #1 on the list of two loss teams. If Michigan and OkSU both lose it'll be mayhem. Unfortunately any upsets will open the door for Notre Dame which could sneak in on the positive side of their double edged non-CCG sword.

There are 4 real conferences (or soon will be once OU and Texas head to the SEC). Those four conference champs should make up the playoff. It’s so simple.

Sorry, they shouldn't be in. They simply do not play the same level of competition as the big boys. One win over ND isn't enough. They play no one the rest of the year. I'm fine either way though; them getting in and getting slaughtered would be fun to watch.

Wait till Herbie gets back to "OSU passes the eye test" with respect to UCin, ND and scUM and then the B1G Commissioner backs OSU over scUM for the playoffs.

Only in CFB.

Will never happen re scUM. B1G would never go against them. Only PSU. LOL

sounds like the arguments made in 1968 and 1969 against Penn State getting the Natty

Let’s assume there is no chaos next weekend.

Georgia is in if they win, likely still in if they lose.
Bama is in if they win, out if they lose.
Cincinnati is in if they win.
Michigan is in if they win.

So if Bama loses, the 4th spot is between Ok State (if they win) and Notre Lame. Would think Ok State would get the last spot.

I agree with you completely, midnighter. Problem is that they are categorized into the same level as 130 or so football programs as D1 teams. That being the case, they belong in.
The problems lies in the fact that we all know that not all D1 programs should considered in the same level. They need to separate what will soon be the 4 big time conferences from the others. Notre Dame wants in they should join a conference.
Edit: Not sure what I did here but that was supposed to be quoted from midnighter. I didn’t see any way to delete it though.

Gotta love the elitist attitudes that downplay Cincinnati’s ability. I’d like their chances against anyone but Georgia. Unfortunately, that’s who they will end up getting if they beat Houston. That will be the committee’s way of saying, ‘ok, there they are, happy now?’ while making sure their ratings golden goose plays on Monday night.

I can’t believe ND is even in the conversation. They lost straight up to Cinn. They need a last two minute TD drive to beat freaking Toledo! What is their signature win? Wisky??? How Ok St is behind them is a joke

Not elitist - they will be lapped by pretty much any team they play in the CFP. OSU would blow their doors off. It’s just reality - they have to get up for one game a year. The rest of their schedule is a joke. Let them in though - will be fun to watch.

Likely the same thinking outside Central PA in 1986 when they matched up PSU and Miami. That’s why they play the games. Same BS thinking happens in March on the basketball court and we see it shot down many times.

Cincy gets a lot of scrutiny by virtue of their weak schedule. There has been a lot of talk in the media of Cincy not being dominant in several of their wins. The deck seems to be stacked against them for the playoff. With their schedule, they need to be flawless. They haven’t been.

Hardly. And this isn’t basketball where one guy can win a game for you.

But if they win next week they deserve to be in over ND.

They only lost to UGA by a late FG last year.

If it were between Cincy and 4 undefeated P5 teams, sure. Snub them.

Piss on a 2 loss Buckeyes. When Bama loses next week, piss on them too.

The playoff system sucks worse than our OL. Eye tests are garbage. Just because Saban has the best roster and historically is the best at playoff prep doesn't mean they get a free pass.

Besides, in '68, '69, and '73 WE were Cincy.

SEC teams, especially ones whose goal is NC every year, often don't show up in their bowl games. And I think Georgia had 9 players opt out of that game, including 7 starters on defense. So, yeah - they don't show up (and still won). 🤷‍♂️

You kind of defeat your own argument. Probably the reason they were better this year. Got rid of the me first NFL hunters and the '21 defense starters got a head start. They showed up or they would have gotten dubbed.

Not an indicator about the coming playoff. It doesn’t appear anybody is going to compete with UGA this year. Still, I'd rather see an undefeated Cincy get beat 40-7 than the other 1-2 loss teams get beat similarly.

And truthfully, if Alabama upsets UGA, I'd rather see UGA miss the playoff. I didn't like Bama backing into the playoff the year they did it either.

Upsets in the player seem to be rare. Only one I can think of is OSU over Bama in the inaugural playoff. The whole thing is just to get more games on TV to get more money. The two beat teams always seem to make it to the end. We will probably see Bama vs. Georgia in the final.

Just a friendly reminder
2018 Peach Bowl - UCF beats Auburn
2007 Fiesta Bowl - Boise State beats Oklahoma

No way. They beat them at ND.

This has to be the year a G5 team makes it, providing Cincinnati beats Houston this week. Undefeated and beat ND. Yes they had a weak schedule otherwise. But all the late upsets are keeping them in the top 4.

Assuming they all win conference championship games,, I'll go with GA, Michigan, Cincinnati, and OK St for the playoffs. GA being a clear cut 1 seed. The rest is up for grabs. If Bama beats GA, then one of Cincinnati or OK St is out. Probably Cincinnati.

They played UGA pretty tough last year. UGA had most of their team from this year in tact.

Depending on the rankings the wild card will likely be Oklahoma St.

They just beat Oklahoma and play 8th ranked (IIRC) Baylor in the Big 12 championship game. Will their SOS get them in over Cincinnati whose schedule is so bad it should automatically disqualify them?

Cincy would beat ND to get the last spot given the head to head result. Would a Big 12 champ Oklahoma St jump those 2 (no conference championship for ND and weak Cincy conference)?

If it was Oklahoma instead of Oklahoma St I’d say it was a given they do jump them- but it’s Okie State who doesn’t carry the same reputation.

Maybe leaving them out would be a blessing in disguise if they destroy their NY6 opponent. For all the playoff experts please tell me who is in the playoffs if Michigan defeats Iowa and Georgia beats Alabama. Thank you!

1. Georgia
2.
3. Michigan
