I get it but I would argue the end of the Big Red Machine happened on December 16, 1976.

Ownership of both franchises, while both are awful, are among the poorest in wealth across either sport.
When the Cincy teams lose money, it hurts their owners more than others.
and Robert Castellini can't afford to lose a little money? he shouldn't risk putting a real contending team on the field on occasion? the working class fans risk hard earned money in hopes of having a good time at the ball park every year.
how can anyone "rationally" defend ownership?

Want to trade places?

😜
I said congratulations St. louis deserves the wild card. I sincerely mean that.
and I'm being honest, I would not want to trade places.
If the Reds won the wild card, they weren't gonna go very far (relief pitching). I'm more upset that the Reds never go very far.
could care less about St. louis

Small market excuse is REALLY old when the "No market or fans at all" Tampa Bay Rays win the AL East 2 years in a row over Boston and the NYY

UC -2.5 on road at ND. Who would have ever believed such a thing?

I picked ND in the straight up underdogs contest, Bearcats are good, but could have easily lost to Indiana, who was laughably overrated this season. Think the Irish end the UC dream tomorrow.

I don't think it is small market at all. The problem is with ownership. Castellini (Reds) and Brown (Bengals) don't seem to care about the product they put on the field. It has been that way for years and they aren't giving any impression to expect that to change. At this point, the teams need to overcome that on their own some how but that will be difficult without the Jimmy and the Joes. They simply need to win without the help of ownership. Both seem like a real life case of the ownership of the Cleveland Indians in Major League.

Secondly is both teams seem to always hire horrible coaches. David Bell should be let go and unless the Bengals continue the 3-1 start for the rest of the year, I think you have to let Zach Taylor go as well. Both do not seem to be the answer, IMO.

I'm just pissed they rewarded the guy who oversaw a monumental end of season collapse with a 2 year extension.

Not defending ownership, they are not rich guys compared to their peers. The fact Castellini has multiple partners means he really is not that rich to absorb big losses which results in them taking fewer gambles on big money.

They need an owner with deep pockets and willing to take the risks needed to win. Cincinnati does not have an owner in either sport. I'm not sure there's a guy in town worth that much, not part of a family.

What about the Lindners?

1. Not part of family I said. Plus, they sold out of Reds.
2. No billionaires in Cincy, if internet to be believed.

My daughter worked at a boutique in Hyde Park when she was at UC, the Lindner women would call ahead to let the owner know they were coming, and my daughter said "suck up" does not begin to describe how the owner treated the Lindners. Of course, they would often spend $30,000 or $40,000 at a time so she got well rewarded for her time and attention. 😄

Sounds like defending ownership to me. comparing Bob's bank account to mine...I label Bob, as rich.
what does Bob's peers bank accounts have to do with his willingness to field a better product? how much of an annual profit must he obtain before he gives back to the fans?
all I am asking is he put a real contender on the field every now and then. is that so much to ask?

Carl Sr. used to drive around town in his white Rolls. Pretty unique sight. Pulled into Embers Restaurant in Montgomery some 20 years ago & saw the RR right next to the front door (I wasn't buying . Me, I didn't even use the valet parking.). Went in & he was over in corner. Nice guy from everything I heard. White was his color. Wore white suits too. Flowing white hair to boot.

Winning is obviously not Castellini's number one goal. The dude is worth like a billion. Spend some freaking money. Modernize the management. Embrace sabremetrics.

Reds are poorly run from multiple perspectives, sadly.

Bengals look much improved this year. In highly doubt they make the playoffs, but moving in the right direction. Burrow/Mixon/Chase/Higgins is a nice young core to build around.

Don’t get your hopes up. As a Bungles fan, the only thing you need to know is the owners name…

I’m saying this as a lifelong fan

More & more real each week. :p Tell you what, if neither makes Final Four, might be a great bowl matchup.
Seriously? You want to win like 9-11 games and play Cincinnati? Yeah that would be a bowl to remember, UK/Cinci would get ZERO national press. No one but us would care. OU/OSU/Texas/etc would be MUCH better for UK and our brand.

I'm a fan of Cincy. I'm really really proud of them for winning the last game of the season. Some people will say it was meaningless, but I think it will be big for them next year. It showed a lot of heart.
And this is flat HILARIOUS. You think that team is going to get back together in 7 months and talk about how they won the last game of a pointless season?

“Hey fellas remember how we beat one of the worst teams in the league and the worst in our division to round out the season?”

“Yeah bro that was awesome.”

Well they are 3-1, 9-7 or 10-6 probably makes the WC weekend, so why do you seriously doubt they make the playoffs?

As for the Reds, cue the Talking Heads - Same as it ever was, Same as it ever was, Same as it ever was, etc., etc.

Sometimes there are small victories in life that lead to bigger ones in the future. They ended the season with heart...how does that not help them next year?

You ever play sports? Not once has a team I’ve been on said, “Boys, I know we didn’t even make the playoffs but we did beat a REALLY ****** team that last game of the season! BRING IT IN! CLEARS EYES FULL HEARTS CANT LOSE! Now let’s go practice extry hard!”

You play hard because you think you’re good and can win, not because you won a meaningless game last year.

I mean, the Diamondbacks beat the Rockies the last game of the season after only winning 52 games and losing 110. You think they all get together in training camp and relive that game to get hype for next year?
