Claiming national titles

Auburn has announced they are now claiming seven additional national titles in football not recognized by the NCAA. Florida State is in discussions to claim the 2023 national title.

I guess there’s no way to regulate it. You can proclaim yourself a title winner for any season you want.

I hope this really takes off and schools just go crazy claiming national titles to delegitimize the whole thing.

Alabama has been doing this for decades. I saw one article that said something like "sure its weird for the short term, but ten years down the road you still get to hang all those banners".

Didn't UCF hang a banner for a national title when they went undefeated but missed the playoff?

I just can't with the way people think these days. I miss the 90's more and more as each day passes. I'm totally disappointed in the world my parents prepared me to live in. No common sense, morals, ethics, kindness and worst of all no quick sand. WTF?

I know what you mean. My parents raised me to live in a Leave it to Beaver world but that wasn't the world I got when I started high school in 1971. But claiming championships pale next to everything else that is going on.

I guess any team can claim a national championship in any year they were ranked #1 by anybody at any point during the season now.

I also come from a generation where there’s winners and there’s losers. If you lose, you lose. Take your lumps and move on.

Maybe Carolina can claim winning the SEC East in 2012. Spurrier thought Carolina should have won the East since we beat every team in the East.

That claim seems more legitimate than Auburn's claims.

I'm thinking we should be super aggressive and claim the 1903 and 1921 national championships.

1921

We had a 1 loss team that year.

We were 5 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties and if you look at the wiki page for 1921 it starts as

"The 1921 college football season had no clear-cut champion"

Maybe we should change that?

1903

We won 8 games, which was a lot for 1903, so why not?

Wiki starts the same way

The 1903 college football season had no clear-cut champion

Again, we should change that

We only lost one game in 1892, but after more research, Yale is the recognized champion of 1892, as they went 13-0 in 1892 and outscored their opponents 429-0, so I believe they can keep it, and maybe we should not claim it?

You know, you never see the 1892 Yale Bulldogs on the list of greatest college football teams of all time, but they have a good argument, statistically speaking, LOL.

I say go crazy. College football is making a mockery of itself anyway as it is.

I guess then that they’ll also be vacating their 2011 championship since they competed that year with a QB that everyone knew had taken money under the table.
