One of the bigger transfer portal bags before the transfer portal was a thing. Josh Brown (RB), Anthony Briscoe (LB), and Carl Lawrence (DB) all transferred to Crest together. Literally the three best players on the Burns team, all seniors, went to Crest chasing gold. Ironically, I don't think Burns and Crest played that year. Their journey came up short, as Josh got injured during the playoffs. There have been many a transfer throughout schools in Cleveland County, but I don't know of any more noise made than the transfer of those three.

Yes, that is correct. We got to watch Karma play out in real time. I was a junior. Back then transferring to another school was unheard of. That was like a UNC basketball player going to Duke or vice versa. I remember Coach Greene getting the word it happened. It destroyed him. It made no sense as the college offers were already on the table. What came of it? NOTHING. No ring. Just a new red car. Kids now days transfer because they want to play with a friend or the other team is loaded. It is definitely a way of life now. Back then you just did not do that but with Kirby during that time period he was willing to do anything. You ask the main player that left how he feels about it now and all you hear is regret. I talk crap all day but I hate to see kids fail at anything they work hard for. That is the only year I genuinely was happy to see a team lose and we had every right to feel that way. Now it is so common everywhere you just take what teams have in week 1 and hope they all find success but I am also 25 years older. lol

Crest and Burns played that year and years around it. Brown was a factor in the 1999 game that went down to the wire.

No sir. That young man is going to have everyone in his ear.
Jordan, his brother, and a bunch of other NC quarterbacks have been training with Chad Grier for several years now. Coach Grier runs a QB Academy. Coach Grier has turned out a lot of D1 quarterbacks in North and South Carolina. He is a great QB trainer. Many of the current top QB recruits in NC right now attend his training sessions. The Jenkins family is very methodical and meticulous in their approach with both of their sons. The family is not moving them unless it’s a too insane to pass up opportunity.

I figured that about Grier. He used to bring Davidson to Burns for 7v7 when Will was there. Good dude and knows his stuff.

He does. I knew he trained quarterbacks but I did not realize how many of the top qb prospects he trains in NC. He invites guys like Chris Leak and Sam Howell to work with the kids also.
Another great trainer who trains many highly regarded prospects in NC/SC is the new D-line coach at Crest who came from Gaffney. He has a long list of dawgs that he has worked with over the years to his resume.

Those transfers caught everyone off guard because they happened just prior to the season. Crest had a great year until they ran into a very athletic Anson County squad in the playoffs.

You are correct. Mixed this group of transfers up. My bad. This was the Kirby Christmas stocking special transfers. I do remember Ron Greene taking this very hard. It’s been 25yrs so don’t kill me lol.
It was a LONG time ago. Won’t forget Phillip Shaw not being thrilled about it during basketball season. Only reason I can remember when they arrived.

I remember back when I got out of the Navy and I worked at PPG for a while. We literally spent hours arguing amongst ourselves about Cleveland County football. Great times. Our shifts would fly by due to all the trash talking. I became friends with a lot of guys that I played against. This was all around the same time frame.

Yep. Shaw got screwed on that deal. That was the beginning of Kirby losing the respect he had earned, especially from other Coaches.
Heard there is a lot of talk about rule changes coming but at this point I don’t see how they could ever police it so why bother? One of our former QB’s had a crack house in Maple Valley as his address while still riding jet skis on Moss Lake. 😂😂😂 Just leave it alone at this point.🤷‍♂️

BB02 I heard we might have had an injury happen during 7v7s. Have you heard?
Talking about the kid getting dehydrated? I don't post injury reports on here but that is the only thing I have heard about. Ambulance was a precaution. They have a dead period this week anyway so you may be hearing about one of the other 7v7 where the heat got on them pretty good.

Met some Shelby parents at the UNC 7 on 7. They were very polite and courteous, and also seemed to understand what it took as far as getting their kids to college and not getting under their coaches skin was concerned. I applaud their attitude and conviction, it was quite admirable.

Sure they weren't from Shelby, Tennessee?

Getting their kids to college is a different way than it used to be. There are so many camps and skill combos out there that the "What high school you play for" has been washed out. It was either last year or the year prior that an athlete went to a huge D1 school but played for an 0-12 High School team. Kids have a ton of opportunities now if they take advantage but they also have to hit the books. I saw a few D1 coaches make their rounds last year in Cleveland County. They didn't go to one school, they went to all 4. Things have changed a lot but if you have parents willing and dedicated to getting these kids out there to some of these camps and combos, you increase their exposure big time.

@beamer24 I was looking at your team’s schedule and it dawned on me that you guys have an excellent chance to grab that #1 overall seed in the 4A west. I have Reidsville, Burns, Hibriten, and Cramer as my top four in the 4A overall but it will be difficult for Burns and Stuart Cramer to have a better record than your squad when it comes to seeding. I believe Hibriten can actually run the table and enter the playoffs undefeated. It’s a lot that can happen but you gotta like Hibriten’s chances.
