I thought it was right to remove the Chief Wahoo caricature, but what is wrong with "Indians"? Are "Fighting Irish" and "Vikings" also bad?

Next up for the mascot outrage mob: Braves and Chiefs.

Probably but I hope not.

I don't see how those are offensive but I'm sure some people do.

Teams like FSU and Utah have agreements with the tribes to use the names. Maybe all the native american named teams should switch to something like that......

I didn't know the Jazz were a tribe. I bet they use glitter in their face paint.

No joke, I like the Cleveland Blues. Blues, Reds, Browns. Just need the Bengals to change.

What exactly is offensive about the word/name Indians? There is a freaking state called Indiana. If I am not mistaken Ohio and Kentucky have ties to Indian heritage by name.

It is as if some want us to forget Indians ever existed.

If I am a Cleveland fan I would follow Washington Redskins lead...even easier for them to do.

Cleveland Baseball Club. Keep the same "C" on their hate and call it a day.

Well first of all, they don’t generally like being called Indians in the first place. Of course there are exception. Within Native American culture, each tribe is considered its own separate nation with little in common other than skin tone. They have their own separate values, language, religious practices, etc. They aren’t Indians, they are Sioux, Navajo, Dakota, Blackhawk, etc.

And then Cleveland is using stereotypical imagery of Indians that doesn’t respect the vast differences in Indigenous culture and is largely considered a negative stereotype.

It would be like if a team decided to call themselves the Whites or Caucasians and the image they elected to use was some redneck trailer park trash person who was fat, slovenly, unkempt, a smoker, an alcoholic, and a wife beater who has sex with his cousins and children because that’s what the negative stereotype of a white person is.

Secondly, the term Indian is a complete misrepresentation of who they are. They are only called Indians because Columbus thought he had reached India, not North America. So they are only called that because Columbus was too stupid to recognize the difference between Indians and the indigenous population.

It would be like referring to every person that has the same skin tone as a Chinese person as Chinese. No they aren’t all Chinese, they can be Japanese, Korean, etc.

Makes some sense. Cleveland dropped Chief Wahoo several years back though. I suppose my original post was to understand why the term Indians is offensive. I get Redskins, 100%. Appreciate your honest answer.
