Don't follow the NBA closely enough to know if this is good or bad for him. Think he stands to make about $6.3 million/year.

Does this make him the highest drafted Gamecock basketball player ever?

I recall watching the draft when Balkman was shockingly picked at 20 to the Knicks. Turned out to be a terrible pick for them.

His rookie deal will average about 6.3 to 6.6 million a year. I would say he is pretty happy 😊

Good God man.. lol. 9th pick in the NBA draft.. I swear I'm not sure if you are trolling or what. You don't have to watch the NBA to assess this was something that doesn't happen often here and hopefully will continue to happen if we ever want to be a regular post season program.

A player can be drafted very high to a team that is just not a good fit for him. Happens all the time. You don't understand sports.

The #9 slot guarantees him about 13 Million over 2 Years. There are Team Options for another 2 Years that would guarantee him another 15 Million. As a First Round Pick, you have to be pretty awful for a team to not exercise the team options and let you go in Year 3 or 4. In that case, a GM is admitting that he made a mistake in drafting you.

Pretty funny stuff:

So was he mad or relieved?????
He may have not wanted to go to Canada. Higher Taxes, totally different climate. A lot of NBA players are reluctant to play in Canada, but usually they love it in Toronto once they get there. Toronto is not a bad city to live in.

I'm not a fan of Canada at all, but for $13m, I'd live in Yellowknife unloading ice-road truck trailers for 2 years - even if I had to pay half of it over to their socialist government. If it's true that money is guaranteed, if CMB is even halfway smart about he spends it, he should live comfortably the rest of his life on what he earns in hist first 2 years in the NBA. I'm happy for him. Hopefully, his success will lead to other top recruits coming to the program.

Oh yeah, that 13 Million is Guaranteed. Year 3 and 4 are options, but all NBA 1st Round Picks get two years of Guaranteed Money. It's slotted by where you fall in the draft. He is a Top 10 guy. So, he has a significant guarantee. That's why a lot of NFL guys are jealous of NBA contracts because most of their contracts are guaranteed. He will get that 13 Million if he is injured and can't play another minute. I remember when Grant Hill signed with the Magic back in the day on a 93 Million Dollar contract and barely played due to breaking his ankle. Got every dime of that money.

Balkman was a Dennis Rodman type player - good defender, high energy, wild card. He played lights out in the NIT tournament, much better than he played in the regular season. Isaiah Thomas was the coaching the Knicks at the time. He must have watched us win the NIT and thought Balkman could help. He was wrong.
