If anyone needs further proof that CMP can run a program and assemble a team just look at BYU.
Granted, Kevin Young is at the helm, but Pope laid the groundwork for the roster. His name doesn't get mentioned enough for their success and the current trajectory of BYU.
If he could build the foundation there, I have faith he'll do an amazing job at UK.

I used Chat GPT for the below answer.

"After Mark Pope departed as head coach in April 2024, the BYU men's basketball team experienced significant roster changes. Several key players entered the transfer portal, including Dallin Hall, Richie Saunders, and Aly Khalifa. Additionally, Jaxson Robinson transferred to Kentucky to reunite with Pope. Despite these departures, the team retained a solid group of returning players, including Trevin Knell, who has been with the program since Pope's first year and planned to return for a sixth season. The exact number of returning players is not specified in the available sources."

Yep. Kevin Young is getting all the credit and Pope gets barely a mention

Saunders transferred?
No the AI chat didn't really answer what I asked it too. I didn't want to do all the research myself :)

But Sanders, Knell and Hall all came back to play for BYU.

Per Grok . . .

- Players left from Pope’s tenure (coached by him): 1 (Trevin Knell).
- Players he recruited still on the roster: 1 (Collin Chandler).
- Total distinct players: 2 (Knell and Chandler).

The roster turnover after Pope’s departure was substantial, with only Knell bridging the Pope and Young eras as an active player, and Chandler representing Pope’s recruiting legacy as a yet-to-debut freshman. BYU’s 2024–25 roster, now at 15 players (including walk-ons), has been largely rebuilt by Kevin Young through transfers and new recruits, marking a clear shift from Pope’s era.

No mention of Saunders, Hall, Baker, Traore, or Stewart

Kevin Young deserves the credit. BYU is playing in the round of 16 for the first time since the Jimmer Fredette days. Pope lost to double digit seeds in both of his NCAA Tournament games when he was there.

You guys are looking for reasons to get upset. Pope isn't the coach, Young is. When Pope was the coach they never got out of the first round. This year they're in the S16.

Previous coaches never will be mentioned unless they're guys like K or Calhoun that really created a foundation for the next guy.

Kind of like Pope did.

My point is previous coaches aren't important enough for media to mention unless they're HOF guys. This isn't the media neglecting to mention Pope. This is just how the world works.

I'm sure the new coach appreciates the players Pope recruited there but Young had to re recruit them.

These same guys lost to 11 seed Duquesne a year ago so Young beating the 11 seed and then 3 seed big ten Wisconsin is impressive though.

Pope did well there, they upped NIL spending now, and the new coach is good. Congrats. I hope we win today.

Agree. If we are being honest with ourselves, Pope struggled in the post season compared to those before and after him at BYU. My biggest concern about him coming to UK, but I’m on the Pope train!
