“One team walked into Madison Square Garden in its team-issued sweatsuits. The other approached the Champions Classic much like an NBA squad arriving for work, fashioned in their outfits of the day. Otega Oweh sported a designer jacket from Amiri that runs about $1,200.”

Michigan state players are still like old fashioned students followed their coach in high standard disciplines

And Pope is too soft, and is not strict on players

And so when he was asked if there’s something about having guys that stick around and stick it out, he too had to temper his remarks. He took a long beat before answering, promising to be careful with his words.

“How about 100 frickin’ percent?” he said. “They’re homegrown and they play for the name on the front of their jersey because they know the name on the front of the jersey.’’

He wasn’t talking about Amiri.

This is where Pope’s preaching of culture rings hollow. What standard is he setting when players are flaunting the differences in NIL, especially when said performer is underperforming. He needs to control what he can control and do it quickly.

I want Pope to succeed because that means UK succeeds. I would have loved for Cal to return to his levels of previous success but everyone knew his ego wasn’t going to let him make changes he needed to make. Pope doesn’t have the ego issue so hopefully it works out.

Who on earth watches or reads CNN other than fiction fans?
I live in Florida and do business in Georgia, Alabama, New Mexico, California and Colorado. Everybody knows this is the culture of Kentucky basketball. Get your head out of the sand.

It’s actually a pretty good article if you put your bias aside. It did feel kinda like there was a distinct cultural difference between the two programs last night. The old CBB way against the new way.
Some on here said Izzo was over the hill or something to that nature, but give me Izzo and his old school way any day.

If you want to see differences in NIL$$$, all you need to do is look at what cars they drive.

It isn’t even the old school way. It’s still THE way to win, I did a full post showing the stats behind it.
Izzo is 100% right, even if I do think he’s washed up. Talent collecting doesn’t work if you can’t keep it in your program. Period.

Damn, that article is embarrassing AF and speaks volumes of the culture at UK at the moment.

It’s not a culture. It’s a group of players that got paid and think everyone is out shopping and walking into the game acting like stand around NBA defense is what the other team is gonna do. No these other teams are out for your blood.

But Oweh bought a nice jacket so….

Now we can finally put to bed the idea that these guys are adults and need to be paid. It’s going to destroy so many kids. Many more after this. None of them have the protection of a coach anymore, just agents and handlers using them for profit. College basketball was dirty before this but now nah, it’s just going to absolutely ruin them. Oweh ain’t going pro. He’s out spending like an idiot and will almost assuredly run out of money at some point and need a regular job. But he’s gonna work for 60K per year now? I don’t this so.

Hope the courts are proud of themselves for ruining tons of kids and the game itself.

It's tough to build a team at Kentucky with kids that stay for 3 or 4 seasons, when as fans 'WE WANT TO WIN NOW'. Those that will be in school that long, are not likely to win a bunch in the first year or two even. Those aren't your 5 star NBA players that can win for you quick. Duke has proved with Zion and Flagg, and Kentucky with all the stars they have had, it is still damn tough to win those titles.
To me, old school is using fundamentals like Stockton and Malone did. Everyone knew what they were going to do with the pick and roll, but if you do it fundamentally, it still works. Izzo teaches good old school fundamentals basketball.

It would help if Pope would just straight up tell fans “this is the plan and this is why” and build the right way. Some fans would get mad, but at least there would be an understanding. Right now, we have fans getting mad at every recruiting update and feeling lost.

With the portal the way it is now I just don't see many players at any school willing to stay 4 years.

Reality of the situation. Treat the players like employees. If they don't want to put up the effort, they can set on the pine.
I'd say go corporate - put them on the bench AND on a PIP (performance improvement program). If they don't meet certain criteria over a set period of time, have the UK GM talk to the NIL folks about reducing "pay". Or better yet, implement fines to the players for not meeting expectations.

None of them came here to play for Pope, they came for the money. Maybe Jasper and Moreno are here for the name on the front of the jersey, but that still doest mean they respect Pope.
AMEN and spot on. it's all about the $$$$ . we have several spoiled brats that think their **** doesn't stink and not only does it stink, it sucks at basketball.

That’s not how NIL works. I’m pretty sure that under the current rules the payments can’t be contingent upon performance.
