Coach Gran and Scripted Plays

I saw in a recent video he talked about scripting plays for the first first half possession and first second half possession. I wonder if this is to A) up the tempo and not allow the defense as much time to adjust and B) help Barker and the offense ?

Also will Gran be on the sideline and Henshaw in the box ?

I can't wait to see this offense.

Everybody scripts plays. As much as anything it is about: (1) an attempt to get a quick first possession strike based on your scouting report of your opponent and (2) to see how your opponent adjusts to various sets and motions.

Ooops - forgot the coaching question. I'm sure they will do whatever they did at Cincy.

Peace

I believe it's to help Gran. It may be for Hinshaw to spot from the box how USM is defending certain plays or to start the game to give Barker "safe plays" or get him in rhythm. I expect Barker's worst series may be his first(like the spring game) and second scrimmage. I'm also sure that if they believe we are going to see a 4-2-5 D, then he may go run heavy to start which would tend to calm Drew down and get him in the flow. I'm sure it will be part of the overall game plan, but will then be adjusted as Hinshaw tells him what D he is seeing in what situations.

Interesting.
I guess that run heavy may also open up play action.
I hope we use the TE's more this year.

Don't know who Henshaw is, but Hinshaw will be in the box - as the two worked at UC. They do script several series but adjust on 3D depending on the situation.

I belIeve Dawson said he didn't script the first series. Given that such an act apparently has several advantages, I can imagine why.

Look for the back to get involved in the passing game a lot with the expected random blitz packages from USM. A lot of slants, delays and dumps to backs.

I always thought scripting plays was a bizarre idea, but it's worked since the days of Bill Walsh and the west coast offense, so hey it works. Hope it helps settle Drew down in his first season at the helm.

I wonder if they have it set up where like the 3rd series this week will go to Stephen Johnson. I expect a run heavy package this week and Johnson might play a role in it.

I also expect o see this and, if so, also expect to see UK receivers / backs with a couple long TD's as the USM will sell out a few times

I've heard Coach Gran say several times that the first play will be a pass to the TE. I say we do it and show them right from the start.

Hate to tell you, but my coach was scripting plays in HS back in the late 60s. He was a QB for Sid Gilman in the early 50s.

Assuming Drew is clear #1, they need to get him all the reps/experience they can.

Nitpicking here but that would likely be a "game plan" decision rather than "scripting". But "scripts" also have certain "packages and special plays" built in should a dictating down and distance situation arise.

For example, if the Cats drive down the field and have a 1st down inside the USM 10 and then Johnson comes in, that may well indicate that (as part of the script) the Cats want to use the "running QB" in a deep RZ situation.

Peace

Scripting provides a statistical base for various schemes that can give guidance for later In the game. It also can create a rhythm.

I don't know whether Johnson will play, but I think he has gained the coaches' confidence. I suspect he will not be a "running QB."

Interesting. The documentary I watched on Bill Walsh/West Coast acted like it was a new thing. Maybe it was just new for the NFL.

The best coaches script plays...and then know when to deviate from their script.
