Coach K Calls it a “Mild Sprain”

I call it a nightmare. For him first, for duke second.

Believe me, I panicked as much as the next guy - BUT, the talk of Zion never playing another minute in a Duke uniform even if it isn’t serious, I don’t buy.

This is a competitor playing for the love of the game, it’s sounds terrible, but the millions are going to be there for him regardless...I would be surprised if it’s NOT a season ending injury, and he still never plays another minute. That’s just me though

Competitor all you want but the first thing I saw was a knee. I hope he plays in college again but I doubt it.

It has to be. When you look at the video, there isn’t any motion that can be seen that would indicate anytear inside the actual knee. The strain has to be in the back of it. Just a terrible situation but the whole thing really never looked that bad in terms of the fall but the shoe explosion was awful.

The thing that worries me is how long it’ll take to come back and will he even be ready to play at a high level?

I’m over that thought, if it’s more then anything mild the season could be in question. But if it’s a mild tweek- he will be back.

After the shock- I realized unless it’s 100000% positively nothing K wasn’t bringing him back without certain confirmation there was no risk, which isn’t happening in time to play tonight. It was only one game. Throw it away, get Zion back soon and let’s roll.

Keep him out until UNC regardless if he’s 100% before then. It’s just the principle. We gotta get them Tarholes back

Again, if it's a mild sprain, Zion will play again this season for the Duke Blue Devils.

I agree. I understand that most say it’s ALL about the money, but if that was the case, many of these guys wouldn’t go to college at all - they’d just sit out a year.

Why play in the Olympics then? If it’s ONLY about money and NEVER about the love of the game, Zion wouldn’t play as hard as he does.

I’ll say it again, if it’s truly only a “mild sprain” - he’ll be back and this game will turn out to be a motivator.

I don’t care about the regular season. Get him healthy and win enough to get that double bye in the ACC Tournament.

Then win the next 9 games and we are all good.

Absolutely, K-ville, you're spot on. And yep, Zion will be fired up, and ready to play...because he's always ready to play. Love the kid.

The entire thing is weird....from how the injury happened to what K said after the game...

I’m surprised he didn’t say out indefinitely....and that he actually said mild and stable without an mri...this seems unusual for K about injuries and I don’t really know what to think about it...I part think he’s being optimistic and should have waited for an mri before saying anything...and part think he’s letting everyone know it’s not as bad as what might be feared...I don’t really know but I thought K looked shook emotionally in the postgame and that’s just another thing that makes you kind of feel this could possibly be pretty bad....

He will be back in 2-3 weeks imo.

Potential losses at Cuse and at UNC, stay top 4 acc and get 2 round bye....

Trainers can get a near positive diagnosis on whether there’s structural damage or not without an MRI. That’s why it’s probably ‘just’ a sprain. Now it comes down to the severity.

This is exactly right. And honestly, they’re pretty dang good and labeling severity strictly off of how “loose” the tendon/ligament is. Doesn’t mean it’s as good as a Doctor, but those dudes know what they’re doing.

I guarantee mom and dad are in his ear right now. Even if is mild that’s how quick a contract can be gone and you can’t blame them that’s today’s deal

After listening to some post game discussions, it sounds like Zion felt good enough to return, and wanted to do so. But the staff and trainers nixed it. Maybe he misses the Cuse game, but maybe not.
.
Strained might be a strong word. Slight hyperextension might be a more accurate statement when all is said and done.
.
Hopeful after these comments.

Where did you see those postgame comments at? I can't find anything other than what K said.

ESPN talked to Maria (I think) their reporter on the sideline. She said that Zion was walking (maybe jogging) to see if he could come back in. Cam and RJ and Tre expressed some belief that they thought he'd change shoes and come back in. And they said words to the effect that IF he was out for a while, that he should stay positive, etc.
.
The sideline reporter made it sound like his return, in this game, was something that wasn't immediately ruled out, and that he was trying to see if he could return. The tone of the players was hopeful, bordering on expectant, that he wouldn't miss a lot of time. The overall tone was optimistic.
.
And if anyone is familiar with my posting history, me seeing things optimistically is not a common occurrence. Homey don't play that (wrt optimism: every thing is awful and will only get steadily worse).
.
So I liked what I heard.

Thanks man! Yeah, I lurk on the board still and I have seen that you can be a little...negative, ;) All of us have that ability man. After tonight, I'd say most of us are feeling fairly down and negative. So, I truly hope you're right and that our big fella will be back in no time.

You're right that K usually doesn't reveal so much, but lol @ "looked shook emotionally." Here come the "K is transferring!" rumors.

Nike is getting blasted over this. How many times have you seen the biggest sports shoe company in the world say that they are going to do a serious investigation into the construction of a line of shoes over the injury of a college player? Said earlier that it was a really rough night for Zion and Duke, but Nike is also getting killed over this.

I have good news. I think you’re wrong :)

Zion looked confused more so than injured when it happened. I’m almost willing to say that he didn’t even limp off the court, just appeared that way with one shoe on and one off. If he tore anything, he wouldn’t have been confused, he’d be doubled over in pain and wouldn’t have walked off the court. He was more concerned with checking out the damn shoe.

His dad went back to the locker room, returned and grabbed his mom and they both went back. You know why? Probably because the medical staff cleared him physically but advised he sit out until a MRI just to be sure. He wanted to play, but valued mom and dad’s opinion + medical staff who probably all agreed to wait to be safe. Hell, I heard he was jogging around the hallways. This kid is still in mint condition.

If there was a chance that Zion wasn’t just perfectly fine, K wouldn’t have said what he said. Not sure how he could of possibly not been emotionally shook. He watched his team play about a miserably as possible. I’d be drained too after not being able to save the trainwreck that just happened. Ready for ZzzQuil, wake up tomorrow and start a fresh day.

I’m actually thinking this exact thing. K knows it’s just one game big picture. You can’t bring in a possible future billion dollar man without giving professionals proper time to be CERTAIN.

Well, if people get their news from WTVD in the a.m., the news ticker prominently states: ZION WILLIAMSON BLOWS OUT KNEE. Very timely and responsible reporting, I tell ya.

I take solace in the fact that getting off scot-free in the academic scandal guarantees Carolina fans will have to deal w/ questions and jabs about it forever, just like we will always get crap over Maggette and Duhon's mom.

Similarly, the barely silver, very bitter lining to this loss is that Zion's injury overshadows UNC's win just about everywhere except Chapel Hill. It's like Roger Maris' asterisk.

Zion will be fine. Trust me.

As someone mentioned above, he had a confused look rather than a in pain look. It was an awkward fall and it makes it look 100x worse when you're 6'7 280. Also they mentioned he said he wanted to come back in. If there was by chance any little sign of strain to that knee, him playing in an emotional game like that is also 100x worse for the situation. Holding him out was a complete precautionary long term decision. All of us can agree we would rather lose yesterdays game for the chance of a healthy March squad.

He misses syracuse, game time decision (like Tre Jones) for VA Tech/Wake Forest and will come back for UNC game.

He’ll play when he’s deemed healthy IMO. The game, the situation doesn’t matter. When our medical staff clears him, he’ll be back in a #1 jersey.
