It'll be interesting to see how this team improves now since a few here thought the problem was K.
Not THE problem, PART of the problem. I didn't have any knowledge of the pain K was in, but it makes sense that maybe he could have been a bit off the last month or two? I don't know for sure, but you don't go from coaching at 100% to then taking 4 weeks off. I'm guessing he wasn't giving or couldn't give 100%.

Only supposed to be out 4 weeks. Which is a big plus for the bad news.

Hopefully, Jeff will be a Capelable coach in his stead. ;)

Really tough blow in a season gone pretty wrong from the beginning. However, if we can hold it together, K should be back by the UNC game (if its 4 weeks from Friday, when the surgery is scheduled, Jan. 6, he'll have missed 9 games).

I told my buddy at the game Saturday that K didn't look the same to me...wasn't walking good IMO and so on....guess I know why now...I had back problems in high school but I'm sure they are worse at Ks age.

Jeff will do fine..may as well get use to it folks cause one day soon it's going to be Jeff's team anyway IMO

Hopefully this lights a spark in this team.....I hope at least

Coach K is a warrior. He will be missed while he recovers. I hope Amile and Matt lead by example and play all out in January. You want to play, Bolden? Time to show some conviction for the first time in your life. Go back and look at Bolden highlights. He's been missing the emotion his whole life it seems. Only four guys are playing with heart: Amile, Matt, Luke and Jayson. Grayson has playing with anger. Hopefully he can channel that to become more productive. We need everyone else to show up. Frank is ready to make the leap. Is anyone else feeling frisky? Hopefully Capel can get these guys lit. Maybe Bobby Knight will come to practice and throw some chairs.

I've had 3 major back surgeries, and it's not fun, so it sucks for Coach K. But I'm still very optimistic for our season. Coach K will be coaching the next game (I think), and I expect a big win.

And after this game Coach Capel takes over. He's qualified, been a successful head coach, and obviously knows the Duke system in and out. Has great assistants to help him also. I really don't expect any problems. And Coach K will return.
Our guys getting playing time together, becoming cohesive, and Grayson returning (and playing under control) will determine our season's outcome.
I still see plenty of hope for Duke having an excellent finish.

you sure they were back surgeries OAD? lol j/k

I've luckily never had a major back injury.

Hahaha, I'm pretty sure they were, Nasty! But they were lower back surgeries, and maybe I had my head up my azz at the time...that would explain the loss of a few brain cells!:)

I'm certainly glad for you that you haven't had any back injuries. It's certainly no fun, but that can be said of most afflictions.

Since you have had back surgery is four weeks a realistic time for recovery?

Topps, that's a difficult question to answer. My 3 surgeries were a bit more complicated than removing a fragment of a disc (not that this is to be taken lightly).

People recover at different rates...of course age comes into play, the general health of the individual, and the surgeon's skill. Have to think K will have the best of medical care, so that should help considerably.
Now I've known a couple of people who have had something similar to K's surgery, and both of them where doing fine after 4 or 5 weeks of recovery. So, I would say that 4 to 6 weeks is a reasonable estimate. But complications do happen, so nothing is guaranteed.

Get Healthy Sir, you're needed. First and foremost by your immediate family (grand kids etc) and obviously your Duke family and friends. Jeff, it's showtime. You've been here before. Let's do it.

I had back surgery when I was in my early teens and it took me about 2 months to fully recover but that was a pretty extensive surgery and technically was 2 surgeries spread out about a week and a half apart. I also had a surgery planned back in 2011 but it didn't happen but if it had happened that surgery would've been less extensive and would've probably had a shorter recovery time but as Dirt said, everyone and every situation is different and take different lengths of time to recover.

My older sister had back surgery last year. Went from not being able to walk/stand up straight to walking out after surgery and feeling great. Unbearable pain to zero pain immediately. My younger sister had back surgery last year and is still suffering over a year later and probably needs another surgery. Depends on how invasive it is; are they cutting through muscle and or bone to get to it.

You know people everywhere have surgery's at inconvenient times. It's just it has happened to Coach K and that's just the way life is. It's important to us because he's our coach. It's relevant to our rival and all other fans of other programs because it gives them the opportunity to try to find something just to bring the Duke program down in their own sick way. But to the ordinary person who has to stay out of work for an extended period of time it can be devastating. Loss of income, no insurance ( yes it happens ) can wipe folks out. So it is tough to lose our coach for a while but every thing's gonna be alright. OFC

4 weeks seems optimistic when it comes to back surgery. Is this a pretty minor deal? As I understand it, back surgery is usually a last resort.

It all depends on the procedure type, and the patient themselves. If it is a MISS (minimally invasive spine surgery), then you could be a quick recovery, with walking the day of the procedure, and back to full-time responsibilities by 3 weeks. If it is a fusion, I highly doubt he would be back at 4, or even 6, weeks. The estimated time frame leads me to believe that this is truly an endoscopic, MISS, that will have him back pretty soon.

K is a better leader than most realize. I'm sure he needs the surgery. He has basically taken Grayson's name out of the headlines and put himself in the path of the bullet firing media

Amile needs to step up, was really disappointed when he did not run back on defense a few times @ VT. Agree with Bolden, zero fire and clearly in over his head with game speed.

I missed the VT game, interesting that Amile was dragging. He played with fire against Elon. Bolden's face and body language makes him look like he doesn't care at all about what he's doing. Even his highlight reels show a bunch of unenthusiastic dunks and straight faces. Tim Duncan was pretty mild on the court but he at least looked determined and would get energized when it mattered. Sometimes Bolden gets fouled and looks "a little miffed." That's literally all I could find on Youtube as far as emotion. Compare this to Jayson's style, which is usually pretty understated too. Jayson shows he cares by being engaged and he comes out his shell a few times per game. We want you to succeed Marques. It's time to take ownership of your life. How you carry yourself matters, especially in a public position like a big time basketball player. Just ask Grayson if it matters.

I blame my father. He and K are the same age, almost exactly. Every time my father has surgery, K is soon to follow. Each time my father had a hip done, K did so right after. 3 years ago my father had back surgery, now it's K's turn.

I intend to tell him of my unhappiness later, haha.

Well, if everything goes alright then 4 weeks would put K at coming back at the first week or so in Feb...just in time for the game with the Heels on the 9th. Would be a great time to return.
