Definitely going to have a shot with him but I can confirm there are some “hurt feelings” that the offer didn’t come sooner over guys like Moreno and Jasper. The plan is for him to stay local so expect UK Xavier and UC to be major players. Go Cats!

Not sure why he's a 2026 recruit not 2025? Anyways would love to keep him and like that he's considering all local teams.

Move away from this guy if he’s already upset and can’t understand that CMP is trying to fill out his next years roster with 2025 guys.

Moreno is a 7ft center and Jasper a5* sg. Both will play next year.

Kinney is a 2026 guy and is upset and wanted an offer before those 2 2025 guys??

Sounds like a me first guy.

I don’t think it’s that deep man…just a kid who thinks highly of himself! Would definitely love him to be a Cat and if I had to guess…he will be! 😎

I have seen him play several times.

He was very good on a loaded Newport team. Of course, he went down in the opening minutes of the 9th region finals. Newport still had enough firepower to beat Cooper. I also saw play several games this summer with Overtime Elite. I hate to see him leave Newport & the state - but that money & publicity is hard to turn down. Rumors of $500K. I’m not sure if that’s even accurate. Seems like a lot for a HS kid. He looked fully healthy again. Put down some massive dunks for a kid his size. Good finisher. Good shot. Not sure if he will grow beyond his current 6’1 height. Word from people who know him is that he held Newport & their strong personalities together. He is supposedly a born leader & led by example by putting the team first over me first ball. Lastly, for guys acting like he’s not on Jaspers level…… he was ranked in the top 30 of his class before his injury. I think he will be back there again.

I think that injury cost Newport the sweet sixteen

I watched him in the All A State against Lyon Co. and in the finals. Nice player. Crazy how a team gets beat in the All A and wins the Sweet 16. You get some private schools in that tournament that are very close to Sweet 16 talent worthy. They did a great job of defending Perry. He still got his points but really never got a clean look the whole time. His teammates looked a whole lot better in the Sweet 16 than they did in the All A. The length of some of those teams gave Lyon County a lot of trouble.

Visiting for BBM.

2026 unofficial visitors
Tay Kinney (PG) 6-2, 160 | Overtime Elite (Newport, KY)
4-star: No. 33 overall, No. 6 PG

  • After picking up an offer from Kentucky on Wednesday while on an unofficial visit, Tay Kinney revealed a return trip to Lexington for Big Blue Madness, which will be for another unofficial. Behind a huge summer on the AAU circuit, Kinney has become a full-blown national recruit. Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Villanova, and Michigan (and more) have all offered him since July. - On3

Love the in-state offers.
Back in the day there was no talk of “in-state”
offers. It was expected that the in-state guys that Coach Rupp and Coach Hall thought could play there were going to play there. That pretty much continued to some degree until the the Coach before Pope got there and while he had a few he really would have preferred not to have had any. Pope is RuppHallian in wanting the best from the state that can play there and I applaud that!

Lyon did beat Newport in the 2023 Sweet 16, so they essentially split two games in two years head-to-head.

How much of that has to do with the current influx of in-state talent though?

Helps but more importantly the mission of the coach and recruiting players to fit a system. Luckily we have a coach that has a system that focuses not just on athletic ability and projected professional potential but on sound fundamentals, players that fit a system, and team players.

I was told by someone with Newport HS ties to watch out for Syracuse because he would get to play with Carmelo Anthony's son.

He is legit. If he were just slightly taller he’d be in the running for the top spot, may still get there. Another 2026 kid I keep hoping to see take a visit is Anthony Thompson from Lebanon Ohio. He is a legit 6’9” kid that shoots the 3 as well as any 2G in the country.
I love Thompson's game and would to snag him. He's a legitimate top 15 talent right now.

My kid and him were same, same coming into their freshman year.. I have video of a game between them where they went toe to toe and shot for shot. He is worlds ahead of my kid now. His size is absolutely a large piece of it, but his shot is the other. He is silky smooth from every spot on the court and is a 7 foot Steph Curry from behind the arc.

Is UK recruiting Thompson?

A lot of in-state talent coming up.

If Pope can get Johnson to go with Moreno this year.

Then Stokes and Kinney.

Gabe Weis might be a good long term investment.

Jaylen Johnson is a possibility as well.
