Overhelping every drive and going under screens versus a team that wants to beat you from beyond the three point arc. Everyone and their mother knew we should be running them off the three point line, staying home on shooters and live with the results. Instead, Pope dropped the ball bad in game prep for this one.

We only had 11 days to prepare. And we had a tuneup against a team that plays exactly like Alabama.

But it was Christmas. You can’t really expect to learn at Christmas

This! Why in the world are we over helping on the drive?! You just can’t come off your man with a team like Bama.

All I know is jaland lowe had like 20 points and we still are down double digits so I don't ever want to hear the injury excuse this year why we lost other games. We have enough players anyway for us not to lose by 35 to zaga and be down twenty to Michigan state and UoFL and lose st home to a mid UNC team.

Now we have a great Lowe this game and still blown out. And JQ is not the 2nd coming of AD

For me it’s as simple as the lineups he puts on the floor and the rotation. We could’ve won today if he did only those things correctly.

I haven’t seen him game prep well very often to be honest. I don’t know what this staff does well to tell you the truth. Nobody seems to improve, we do the same things every game.

Tbh I wouldn’t be sad to see Pope just resign. I can handle losing but not egregiously bad on-court coaching and poor preparation. If we switched rosters with Bama, we’d have still got belted.

No we wouldn’t.

No matter the line up they are not being coached. No one is getting better. Even the comebacks from last year are not better.

We are not prepared for any opponent.

If there is a game plan no one knows what it is. Including the players.

We have no offensive system. We have no defensive system.

Our offense is hope we make it. Our defense is hope they miss.

We don’t play hard. We get out worked every game.

Alabama had 2 guys get hurt today. But they didn’t use that as an excuse to not compete.

The hiring of Mark Pope as head coach has just proven to be a total fail.

You are 100% correct. I will sadly make a thread later but it’s painfully to say but smart people don’t always have common sense. Just BASIC knowledge is lacking in every aspect of UKs game.

Weird to say but honestly it feels like last year's Pope is not this year's Pope. We don't have the guns but anymore it's starting to feel like it's about more than the guns.
Last year was a solid team, but they weren’t even that good. We won games because they could score. This year we can’t score or defend against good teams. Not a good plan. Pope is exactly who most people thought and why a lot of people were ticked off when he was hired. He’s not the caliber of coach we should be looking at, let alone hire. That is our pathetic AD’s fault though. He should be fired tonight too.

We also had Lamont Butler who could defend positions 1 to 3. And I don't mean he could defend the 1 or defend the 2 or defend the 3. I mean he could defend the people playing 1, 2, and 3 and let the rest of the team worry about the other two guys.

We have beautiful souls. We need killers, athletes and dudes who can ball.
You can have a team full of them, but if your coach decides that we are going to overhelp on drives, which puts our bigs on rotations they don’t need to make and give up wide open 3s it won’t matter. If you have a coach who won’t come out of drop coverage after getting burned on four straight basic PnR sets, it won’t matter. It’s amazing to me how we always think it’s personnel instead of the guy who moves the pieces around. You have an elite rim protector— why not extend your defense and smother the perimeter, stay home on shooters and trust you elite rim protector to shadow the drives? Instead we gave up almost 20 three point makes and frankly got lucky a bunch of other ones missed? Pope has failed to show he can coach defense and that’s why I don’t see how it gets better. I’m not worried about the offense — sure, I understand that we don’t have the shooters to score 88 points, but you have a defense that you can create offense with and we don’t. Coaching malpractice of the highest order. Point blank.

The only way this team was gonna have success is to buy into becoming a defensive juggernaut. I thought they were showing some signs of that against IU and St John’s. But Pope refuses to start the guys who can do that. They’ve regressed back to the early team with no fight in it whatsoever.

He doesn’t like that style of play. He’d rather lose his way I guess

BYU improved after we took Pope off their hands. For them addition by Subtraction. I actually drank the Kool Aid and thought maybe we made the right choice with Pope but he just looks as lost as Stoops did last year. He will get another year but like Stoops it will just be a transitional year to a new coach. Dusty May or Bruce Pearl?

I wish it was who we were playing versus not playing. Man, Pope is tactically awful sometimes. Like, hard to tel what we are even trying to do defensively versus ball screens at times. If he can’t coach defense, he’s responsible to have someone on the staff who can. I’m probably as smart as your average 5th grader and I feel like I could figure out how to score against our defensive schemes.

Pope did worse than the guy he replaced. BYU hit the lottery when we paid to take egghead off their hands.

This so much man.

I'm honestly sick that I ever drank the kool aid.

I remember during Cal's last season, there were some posters advocating for Pope. And I would always shoot that down. That would be an incredibly stupid hire based on nothing more than his status as a former player. He hadn't shown enough to deserve it. He's not ready.

When Cal was gone, I made a list. Pope wasn't in my top 15. When they announced the hire, it felt like a dark day.

Then the press conference came. And the 96 nostalgia fired me up. He's a well-spoken, smart guy. I went on to learn that BYU's restrictions makes recruiting hard.

THEN last year happened. We won games we had no business winning. We won games despite not having a PG most of the season. Wem ran these BRILLIANT high level offensive sets.

He clearly had to a be a special coach.

But now...

We don't do anything well. We built this team on athleticism and defense. We won't play good defense. We don't win due to the athleticism. We don't run good offense. We don't dribble well. We don't pass well. We don't rebound well. We don't set screens well.

We had 10 days between games. I have 7 month old new born twins. I'm pretty sure they both know Alabama wants to shoot 3's. And you'd think with TEN days, we'd be prepared. We'd have sniffed out the pitfalls.

Instead, Collin Chandler went under EVERY. SINGLE. SCREEN.
We lost their best shooters all day long.
When we were actually in guarding position--we'd let their shooters catch the ball with space. And then we'd wait until they were off their feet releasing the basketball to try to close out.

This is going to sound like hyperbole. But it's not. I could have played better 3 point defense today. I play pick up games at our local gym. If a dude can shoot it, he's not getting an open look on my watch. I will go over every screen. I will have a hand on him the entire game. Space does not exist.

And while Alabama's shooters are far better than the dude's I'm playing against at the YMCA--the concept is the same. We told an elite 3 point shooting team we didn't care if they had open shots.

And it's not like he had a bad season for his first year. We had some rough games but that's to be expected when you play against good coaches and teams.

I don't think anyone truly saw this collapse coming.
Nah. This time 2 months ago, we thought we had a national championship team.

We might not be good enough to win the NIT at this point.

No, anyone baffled isn’t seeing the bigger picture. It’s easy to explain why we went from a slightly above average Kentucky season last year to this — and it’s actually really simple: Pope cannot coach defense — I don’t know if he overthinks things or what, but it is extremely obvious to anyone who wants to see it.

We built a roster to win with defense and this was Pope’s chance to show he can coach that side of the ball —- he’s shown he can’t and that’s why we stink.

Please, someone explain to me, how the ball screen defense can be so terrible! They have to be working on it daily, correct? It drives me insane watching them give up wide open shots over and over again.
