i cant think of any top shooter, ever, who can also blow by defenders. not even in the NBA. but ok, yes when they smother him he has a tough time getting open looks, by definition. if he’s “not athletic’ how does he rank 18 in steals in the country and doesnt get the ball stolen when he drives ?
I think steals is more about anticipation than raw athletic ability.

Ok, score 1 for Colbert. I’ll concede that both are probably equal. Cam is not the quickest guy on the court but he’s quick and athletic enough to be a solid high major off-guard. Not an all-American but no slouch and it’s not his athleticism that matters but that as a good three point shooter on a weak offense he’s the primary focus of every opponent

Watch the replays or highlights.
You’d be amazed where Cam is during many of Paul’s back to the basket backing in or drives through a sea of defensive bodies attempts to penetrate

We need Derek to play more minutes. Need someone who can penetrate and be a threat to score. I’d start him over Paul. Not because of Paul’s performance necessarily, but because of game plan.

Our game plan this whole season has revolved around slowing things down in a half court offense, limiting the possessions of our opponents, and maybe crashing the boards for some easy points. Hence why even when we have time on the shot clock, Paul probably slow plays it for the first 5-10 seconds on our side of the court. It’s probably deliberate and staff were aware of our offensive limitations. Without Mag, you don’t have that extra slasher, rebounder, toughness to pound it in though.

If you played Derek, Cam, Cliff, Caleb, Aundre, you might actually be able to drive to score, kick out for three or alley-oop to Cliff. Notice how the alley-oop is almost nonexistent for us anymore? The floater in the lane is probably always there because opponents are aware of the alley-oop to Cliff, but Paul never takes it or is able to get there.

If Paul was sixth man, his slow play might actually buy our starters a breather. Maybe he might even be able to punish our opponent’s second string guards and get his offense going again. He might be able to create more bench points for us, while the starters are getting a breather.

If we continue our offense the way it is now, we’re going to continue to struggle. We need to change it up and bring in someone close to what Geo, JY, Corey Sanders used to be for us. Someone who would drive to score. Derek is a freshman and might make some mistakes, but that’s why we keep the rest of the starting lineup the way it is.

Don’t disagree with the idea, but Pikiell would never bench Paul in a million years.

The whole idea in today’s game is to keep players happy, show recruits you feature them more and more over their careers and with that baseline, Pikiell is even more a players coach than others. Winning strategy is secondary to loyalty, you just hope you win despite the favoritism. Without the favoritism, you won’t get good recruits in the first place.

Is why we try to feed Cliff ad infinitum despite the usual futility of that. It’s to keep him happy and attract the next Cliff.

Unfortunately, that might be the case. Maybe if not bench Paul as a starter, at least just get Derek more minutes (in replacement of Paul) with Cam and Cliff for an inside and outside threat.

I have no problem getting Cliff the ball in the post. The problem is that every team has done the same defense and we have failed to adjust. He catches it fairly far from the box. The minute he starts dribbling, double team him. He’s not the passer that Myles was, so they either get a turnover or he passes it out and restart without taking advantage of opponents being out of position, no harm, no foul.

Simpson is inconsistent but at times does not look capable of effectively running the offense. His better minutes have been at the 2

I have been a longtime fan and know a little something about the game. What I can't understand is why it is so difficult to create open looks from the outside especially for Cam Spencer.
We managed some success during the first half of the Wisconsin game when Cam went 5 for 6.
It can't be that difficult to run offensive sets to get our shooters open.
All I see is our guards excessively dribbling into traffic, no ball movement, passing to Cliff 5 feet away from the basket where he is ineffective, or being forced to drive the lane deep into the shot clock.
There is no semblance of an organized offensive game plan.
Why don't we play more inside out? They force the ball to Cliff who is often then double teamed. Instead of him taking low percentage shots, he should be able to kick the ball back out to an open shooter.
We will score more points taking more 3's than the current strategy which is clearly not working.
The coaching staff has to be able to fix this offense.
Like to hear suggestions from the peanut gallery on how to make our offense more efficient with the personnel we have.

I think part of the issue is too much dribbling BUT with Cam being the only REAL outside threat it’s easier for teams to make it difficult for him. Can you do that to Iowa? No. I think once Gavin comes and other more offensive players we will see Cam, Gavin and the crew get more open looks and layups with our faster guards. Gotta keep grinding it out u the more offensive played arrive. Future is extremely bright. Hopefully we win today with our perimeter D and enough scoring!

He can’t get where he needs to go vs decent ball pressure. Good ball pressure guys eat him up

And who is stretching the defense ??

There are three point shooters and three are same shooters …who can shoot the same percentage an extra step away and sone who can’t

We don’t have a 25 foot shooter …if there is one thing (and there is more than one of course) that we miss about Ron and geo is that they could shoot from 25 ans 26 and not just at the stripe

The impact on creating floor spacing opportunities for others can’t be understated when you can stretch the space the defense has to guard

Not to toot my own horn, but I think my original call has some validity. This offense looks completely different (for the better) when it’s run through Derek.
