Will top recruits start considering us if this is the case? Until the talent level upgrades struggles will continue. I'm always thinking it starts with pitching, probably old school thought.
Look at Coastal's starting roster. Most of their players are from S.C. that USC never offered or pushed for a commitment if offered. We were too busy going after the cream of the crop in the S.E.

There are going to be multiple players from the midlands in the World Series along with a good many top players at other schools that weren't offered by USC. Poor evaluations and lazy recruiting.

By top recruits, I didn't mean to imply "5 star" etc. I meant players with the attitude to win. Similar to our classes during 2010 - 2013. You're correct on Coastal recruits and lazy recruiting.

Wasn't Monty Lee brought in/kept around as someone with statewide connections with high school and AAU-type programs?

Cannot underestimate good coaching and clubhouse chemistry. That's why we were successful during those years.

Still amazes me that Tanner had his finger on the pulse and was able to make all the right moves at the right time in the dugout.

Yes. Two things. The game has changed with NIL and the portal. Secondly, Monty has the connections but can he bring in the right players? I am pretty connected to high school baseball in the state. Monty is struggling to get players from his former high school to attend USC. As the losses mount, his job continues to get tougher.

With all the coaching issues posted and alluded here, it's a wonder anybody with any talent would consider coming to USC.

In 50+ years of following Gamecock baseball off and on, it stuns and saddens me to post this assessment. :(

I just reviewed Coastal's roster - I focused on the starting lineup for first World Series game and for pitchers, I took their top 3 starters and top 3 relievers in terms of appearances. In their starting lineup - only one went from a SC high school to Coastal - Mitchell (I believe that is Gamecock QB Allen Mitchell's son - I also believed USC made an offer to him). There are 2 other starters from SC but they transferred to Coastal from other schools. Their starting pitchers are from Virginia, Michigan and New Jersey. They do have one reliever from Myrtle Beach, the other two are from Washington State and NY. So, in reality out of top 15 players, two went to Coastal from a SC high school - one from Coastal's backyard and the other was offered by USC, but declined. If anything, Coastal's track record shows we should consider the entire country in making offers. It worked for them!

I probably got caught up too much in one game. The game i watched was absolutely dominated by the pitcher from Socastee. In that game, the boy from Elgin (shortstop) and Gilbert were key contributors. That said, you are correct that there aren't a ton of SC boys on their roster.

I get a little frustrated because there are at least 3 boys from the midlands in the World Series that could be playing in Columbia. I know one personally. His parents are gamecocks.

Looks like Manieri is starting to recruit from outside of SC and the southeast.

Was that up to Manieri? Also, Coastal must have made a great offer.

How did we fail so even with Williams as pitching coach?
Mainieri brought his own guy in. And as for failing with him, we lost like 2 or 3 of our top 3 or 4 pitchers to injury. He was working with underclassmen and guys that weren't expected to be in the weekend rotation.

We seem to lose 3 or 4 top pitchers every year. Sounds systemic.

From what I remember from last year on this board the consensus was he was a terrible pitching coach and couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag and this year his team is a couple of wins from a NC! Go Figure!
That would probably be people who were doing mental gymnastics to deflect criticism from the head coach.

I've written this before, and worth stating again.

It takes talent (and no or few injuries), good coaching, and team chemistry to get to Omaha. A "premature" end to the season without all three.
