Hazell was on a scorching hot seat going into the year, but I am not sure why a firing was done now, unless Purdue wants to give the interim a serious look. Miles would be crazy to go there. For that matter, so would Brohm.

I look for miles to take a big 10 job. Something like Purdue would be perfect for him.

Purdue has a terrible football tradition. Since 1970, it's had nine coaches. Seven fired with losing records. Take away Tiller, and it's a four year average tenure. I don't know who they're going to hire, but it will be the fifth best coach in the MAC or third best in the OVC.

But you can't take away Tiller....he got them to the Rose Bowl and even Hope took them to Bowl games...and yes it would not surprise me if they went for Fleck as well. He would listen as would any coach at a G5 not named Tom Herman.

Lawrence county's own. Crazy how many coaches comes from our small county. Phillip Ratliff (was on Marshall and Charlotte staff until his untimely passing), Dante Wright was a grad assistant here and is working his way through the ranks, Jason micheal was the offensive coordinator last year for the titans.

If I'm not mistaken Parker lead the nation in receiving yards his senior season. Not bad for an offense that believed in three yards and a cloud of dust.

They'd be silly not to call Greg Schiano first. He may have better offers coming though.

Would agree with Fleck getting a call, seems like the type of gig he will get next. He's not quite in the market for a top P5 gig. A lower tier program is probably where he will end up, whether it's Purdue or a comparable school.

Obviously Neal Brown is another newer name that will be drawing interest. Won't be long before Major Applewhite starts to ping on a lot of radars, if he hasn't already.

However, If I were Brown, Fleck, or even Brohm I would put my name in the Houston hat. Great situation there. Stable, competitive, and nationally recognized program now thanks to Herman, Sumlin, and Briles. Easy access to the best talent in the country. No starting from the bottom and having to totally change a culture. No conference top dogs to compete with. Very easy way to catapult your career. But I digress, back to Purdue.

Boilermakers seem like a Brady Hoke type of program. He's a mid western guy who's already coached in the state of Indiana, and the big 10.

Agree 100%

Nick.Holt is his d coordinator at Univ of Wash (I live it in Seattle) and he was awful. If Brohm doesn't figure this out quick there will be no luster on him.

Back.to OP topic, I don't understand why you fire at this point unless there is something we don't know. Scorching hot or not. What is gained by doing it when your team is 3-3?

I would consider Purdue #2 in the state over the long term, but unfortunately for them their program has been in a long slow decline, while IU seems to be making baby steps in the right direction.

It's slightly surprising that the Purdue AD pulled the trigger at this point but I guess he had seen enough to make his decision. Don't know if it will be at Purdue or not but I would imagine PJ Fleck will be coaching somewhere else next season.

Purdue's academic standards don't help their football program. What is it with these black and gold teams (Vandy, Purdue, Wake Forest) and their damn rigorous standards? You're killing football, folks!

Hence, the word "wish". In my opinion, we should have gotten rid of Stoops after the Loserville game last year and would be willing to bet that he won't be here more than 1 more year(unfortunately)If he had an athletic director with any sense, it would already have happened.

I think that would be the best option for them. Fleck already recruits the B1G area. So he has an in with many coaches.

Fox has a good article on which schools will be changing coaches and who the top candidates are. There may not be a large turnover this off-season.

Purdue, LSU and Baylor may be the headliners.
Potentially you could have Texas and Oklahoma. Other openings may come as a result of coaches leaving for other opportunities, say Hermann goes to Texas or LSU, Houston then needs one.

From CBS on Purdue this afternoon on the Purdue gig:

The job has to be attractive to Fleck and others: Big Ten, some history of success. Word is that state officials have committed financially to bring Purdue into the 21st century in terms of facilities, etc.

That means a 35-year-old coach who has Western Michigan ranked for the first time ever may not ruin his career by going to a Big Ten bottom feeder.

Then again, Fleck may want to check with Hazell and Danny Hope. For now, Purdue should be thinking sitting head coach with an offensive background for its next hire. The Boilermakers need to get out of the doldrums.

For now, Purdue is playing out the string, hopefully trying to land one of these candidates.

1. P.J. Fleck, Western Michigan: This whirling dynamo is the best thing to happen to the MAC since Terry Bowden. Sure, he's a rah-rah guy. And his motivational stuff is, well, different. Fleck is 23-10 since starting 1-11 with the Broncos in 2013. Here's my profile on him from last year.

2. Les Miles, free agent (ex-LSU coach): Crazy Les has told people privately and publicly he wants to coach. For this Ohio native with Big Ten roots, Purdue would be a comfy landing spot.

3. Troy Calhoun, Air Force: I've already been told Calhoun would be interested. The long-time NFL assistant has peaked in the Mountain West. Don't be fooled by the Falcons' option attack. Calhoun is experienced with any offense.

4. Jeff Brohm, Western Kentucky: Bobby Petrino's successor in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Brohm is 24-10 in two-plus seasons and won the Conference USA title last year.

5. Rod Carey, Northern Illinois: Coached the Huskies to the Orange Bowl a couple of years ago. Oh yeah, and he beat Purdue by 31 in 2013. Possible downside: Carey would be a second straight MAC coach.

6. Brock Spack, Illinois State: Joe Tiller's old defensive coordinator has spent eight years in FBS. Blah.

7. Mike Sanford, Notre Dame offensive coordinator: Tough sell with the Irish now 2-5, but Sanford, still in his 30s, is well respected and already has future NFL quarterback Deshone Kizer on his resume.

Really like Troy Calhoun to be pinging on the radar of a number of programs going forward.

He's built a competitive and stable program at Air Force with limited football talent, time, money, and resources. Same can be said for Ken Niumatalolo at Navy.

Also like Calhoun's pro experience as well.

Two names to watch as mid-lower tier P5 programs open up in the near future.

There are going to be a ton of job oppenings.....and a good amount at the top. LSU, Texas, USC, etc, etc. The cascade effect will be huge. Herman will leave Houston for a major program, Houston will get an up-and-comer, etc.

Programs like Purdue (and potentially UK) may be in bad shape. You're not likely to attract a first choice guy this year.....and especially not for a good price.

Houston fate was pretty much sealed today with the Big XII decision to stand pat.

Don't ya think the Big 12 decided to stand pat because Texas runs the Big 12 and wanted Houston's coach and the thinking was if Houston could get in the B12 he might stay there? Hate to go all conspiracy and what not.....heh

That might be part of it but with this I just can't see how that league last past it current TV contract. But Houston, Cincinnati, BYU etc...etc are now stuck in the G5

For the moment, yes. But it's not like they can't change their mind in an instant.

Still, Houston will continue to do well. Texas state talent, huge city with plenty to do, fantastic facilities and funding, good coastal climate, and with recent winning tradition. The Big12 better not wait too long.....another conference may pick up Houston.

Strangely, the newspaper up there made a big deal of Purdue calling a TO right before :)30) halftime, then took a knee with the next snap. A little weird, but you use or lose TO's each half, so I don't understand the big deal.....

Purde facilities and tradition are not good. Any good coach would be nuts to take that job with the schools that will be open this year.

Fleck is an absolute beast. I hope and pray we can somehow get him here. But again, doubt it as he should get a shot at better program. He and Herman are going to be the two most sought after coaches in the country at the end of this year.

Stoops, buyout....if he's let go....I think Barnhart should pull the trigger and bring in a big name hire for football, like he did with Calipari...he needs to stop floundering with football, especially if your putting so much time and effort with upgrades for facilities, then upgrade the HC!

Big time buyout + Big name hire isnt something UK can afford to do.

So, you either buy him out and take a coach on the cheap, or you let the buyout shrink and he either turns it around or you have the spare cash to shoot for a big name.

Mitch needs to be canned for his abysmal contract negotiations....but we're stuck with Stoops for the time being, for better or worse.
