College recruiting question

It appears to me that many if not all of the most local colleges do not even attempt to recruit southeastern NC. I've never heard of Campbell, a fairly new football program in our area, Barton. also new doesn't seem to be interested, definitely UNC, N C State, Duke only look for the guys who fit the model they believer every position should have. Does anyone have an answer as to why this appears to be the normal? I just don't believe that there isn't any talent that warrants a look.

They are aware of local talent but to be honest there is so much talent out there. I've discussed Avery Gaby on one of NC States premium message boards. There seemed to be a hint of maybe a PWO (preferred walk on) I'd love to see him get a shot. A RB in college is required to read blitz's and pick it up and block for the QB. That's probably something he has never done so there is a huge learning curve. I wanted them to offer Kanye Roberts last year. So I have no say.

I agree javonte Williams only had 1 fbs offer and it came after he ran all over Reidsville in state title game....and look what he is doing now(I know he got hurt) but he is in the league

You all have to remember, you are competing with millions of teenagers around the country. As a recruiter, Its an impossible job to see everyone, plus you may not like it but the level of competition these kids play against matters, as well as their footbal iQ which entails schemes, and other intangibles that kids also learn at camps.

It's also simple math(especially if you have limited time and budget) Whatever you are looking for you are going to go where the concentration of fruit is, not where the fruit is more scarce.

This is great Chopper…
You kind of went off the rails a little with the simple math and whole fruit analogy but well done…🤷‍♂️

Check out Alex Highsmith Wilmington. He wasn't recruited much at all but he joined the Charlotte 49ers as a walk-on and redshirted his true freshman season. Earned his spot and scholarship and became a collegiate star at Charlotte and then a third-round draft pick of the Steelers ... now a starting linebacker in the NFL.

Yea I always point out George Koonce that played for us with West Craven. Everyone was looking at Jesse Campbell when we had 2 D1 recruits at the time. George went to Chowan for 2 years then transferred to ECU where he led them in tackles for 2 years. Played with Green Bay and was a major player on their defense winning a couple of Super Bowls. Gearoge had a never give up attitude and that is how he was successful. Many kids would have never gone to college.

The best player on the high school football field may not be the most suited to play at the next level. I know that may be hard for some people to digest but take a smaller linebacker for instance, great recognition, high football iq, nose for the ball and coachable. He may be better than the 3 or 4 star recruit he is playing against but because he is too small to play linebacker at the next level
and a step or two slow to switch to safety there is no place for him.

Then you have to take into consideration he may be a better student than athlete and would rather have a degree from a well known university than pay to play at a smaller private (expensive) university. I speak from experience here.

For Gaby, he has the size and can put on a few more pounds but I don’t know what his 40 time is.

I admire those walk-ons that have the heart and desire to hang in there but you realize the higher rated recruits are getting the first chance to fail or succeed.

I would love to see him play at the next level. Man he runs hard. Hopefully someone will give him a look.

Not sure about the 40 time. But he won the 110 hurdles state championship last year. His time would have been good enough to win 4A as well. So, I would say he is pretty darn fast. Having said that, I think he projects as a LB.

Am I the only one that thinks he’s a McCaffrey type player.

The HS coaches in SE North Carolina have to be proactive will colleges too. Works both ways. Say what you will about them as playoff coaches, but the current staff at Clinton advocate more for their kids than all the previous coaching regimes in Clinton combined.

You are not the only one Dogs79. I don’t know about his pass catching ability
I was more impressed with the young’s power, north and south running style. I do know he has some speed, though. But, he wasn’t all that agile, in my opinion. CMC can cut on a dime. The man has moves. I think Will Shipley, Clemson’s running back, kid from Weddington, resembles CMC.

I see linebacker, or even a slot(Hunter Renfrow) tbh.
I can’t see him getting in and out of breaks as a receiver. However, I could see him bulking up about 20lbs, and playing fullback for one of those service academy teams. Otherwise, it’s linebacker, in my opinion.

Good point, but If he's on a team with 2 really good receivers, he's the sneaky 3rd one(slot maybe). That's why I brought up Renfrow.

East Carolina came to the school to talk to him end of last week. From what I've told most colleges see him as a slot receiver. Just what I've been told.

East Carolina does a decent job of recruiting eastern NC - as would be expected. I know several NHHS players have made their way to Greenville over the years.

I don't know about RB or slot. I was thinking edge rush type player. As a LB I'm not sure how he would play in space.

NC State and Tennessee offered #10 in the last week. I think we may have 1 or 2 more that received possible D1 attention with good spring/summers……yes current staff doing a lot for the kids not just on the team but the whole area bringing a lot of colleges to look at kids in this upcoming showcase in May and now announcing a senior bowl with colleges coming next year in December.

Had not heard about Tennessee, that’s cool.
