When comparing stats from last year to this year, I would only look at Big Ten stats.
And I'd focus on "Per 40 minutes" because the coach, not the players, decides who gets to play.
Here are those numbers for 5 guys who played a lot last year...

PlayerPts/40Rebs/40Assts/402 pt %3 pt %TOs
Nance 20-2116.59.32.558342.0
Nance 21-2220.48.23.551442.6
Buie 20-2115.12.15.338363.1
Buie 21-2219.83.85.643402.4
Beran 20-219.54.82.051301.6
Beran 21-2210.56.80.553331.2
Young 20-2115.39.12.659N/A3.0
Young 21-2218.511.32.348N/A3.4
Audige 20-2116.44.52.744373.3
Audige 21-1116.76.32.746292.1

Obviously this is a limited stats set and does not tell the whole story. But from this perspective, the most notable improvement (year over year) is Boo Buie, who has improved each stat.
Nance has significantly improved his 3 point shooting and is scoring better for that reason.
Beran has improved his rebounding, but his assists are almost zero and his scoring is subpar.
Audige has cut the turnovers and rebounded better, but his 3 point shooting has been poor.
Young is about the same as last year.

Boo has been playing very well of late. He has the ball in his hands a lot, so there will be mistakes. But, in my under-informed opinion, his ratio of good possessions : bad possessions has moved in a very favorable direction the last several weeks.

In my humble opinion, Collins' biggest failure is his failure to recruit a point guard after B-Mac. Boo is not a point guard. We need a point guard who, when the game is on the line, can take it to the rack and score, draw a foul or dish to another player. Boo can't do that and we stand around the 3-point line jacking up shots. We lose virtually every close game because we don't have a point guard who can penetrate. Against Illinois, Boo drove 3 times in the last few minutes and came up empty every time. Until we get a true PG our losing will continue.
