not bad for a 4 year stint

You hate to see these guys go but you also can see an up side in having a history and reputation of having assistant coaches who are up and comers. A kid coming to the Cats now will have a connections with many programs some pro programs and some college via NU and Collins. He has other connections via Doug. It is good to be able to toss around connections that might lead to future employment either with the pros of college teams.

"Two days after the game, Northwestern director of player development Ryan Humphrey, now an assistant coach at Notre Dame, texted Vassar to meet in the coaches' office before practice. There, according to Vassar, he sat down with Humphrey and assistant coach Armon Gates, and the two men broached a subject he hadn't expected to come up: transferring to another school.

"They said, 'Coach wanted me to speak to you about what was going on lately,'" Vassar told VICE Sports. "They said, 'I know you've been frustrated, are you thinking about transferring?'"

According to Vassar, he told Humphrey and Gates that while it was frustrating that he was not able to play as much as he had hoped, he was not interested in transferring. Vassar said his coaches asked again, and that he again said no."

Electronic communications reviewed by VICE Sports appear to show that Humphrey texted Vassar four times between April 10 and May 30, 2015. Vassar said the texts were about signing the roster deletion form. From the texts, which Vassar did not respond to:

● April 10: Just checking on you.

● April 15: Check your email can you sign and return that to Polisky. Thanks.

● April 20: Hey I need you to get the paper work done and get it to Polisky.

● May 30: Just want to check on you and see how your doing? If you want me to contact anybody I will.

Nothing here on doctored time sheets. The time sheets happened months later. If they were doctored I would think a crime was committed.

I think if Collins wants to keep an NU alum on the roster, Jitim could be as good as any other candidate? Who else is out there? Hardy maybe?

This always fascinates me about NU fans... what's the fascination with having alums as coaches?

I don't disagree with your direction, but it's not simply an NU thing. That idea is pretty pervasive throughout college sports.

Look at Duke.

Being an alum enables a coach to relate to a kid and his experience at NU better. It also makes for a better recruiter, someone who can point to his own experience and speak to the merits of the school and the experience. Generally, I think there may also be a tad more loyalty.

Pat Fitzgerald isn't the coach for NU that he is without having been a Wildcat.

Exactly. One of the strikes that other recruiters supposedly use against us is how tough it is to play D1 ball and still survive the academic rigors of NU. Having at least one alum on the staff who can allay those fears seems very important. Moreso at NU than elsewhere. Of course I'd like to see Collins hire the best candidate, but all other things being equal (or even close to equal), I'd like to see a former NU player get the spot.

Yes and there are many more coaching jobs than there are NBA player jobs with coaching jobs having life long potential. There is more BB in life after the NBA if your school has prepared you to be a coach.

As per Teddy, it looks like Collins is going hard after Donlan. Would be a terrific homecoming if it pans out. Billy Sr was an assistant under Foster and Byrd so junior grew up in and around Welsh-Ryan. It would hurt Michigan a bit.
