For all of you who have said I was wrong about the points record being 177.5, you are correct. But not for the reasons you stated.
What I have been waiting for someone to point out that no one did was that Jim Zalesky was the #1 seed that year AND he got a pigtail match, something that would not happen now.
I just revealed it on the Iowa forum, so figured I would do the same here.
In that pigtail he stuck ASU's Chris Bodine. Take away that 3 extra points and you are looking at 174.5. I have thought about going through all the brackets to make that adjustment, but have gone back and forth on how to do it.
Zalesky's situation is clear, as is any with a seeded wrestler. Less clear are the unseeded wrestlers. At the margin, it probably makes little difference, though.
