Some good comments from Fleck. I know he gets a lot of flack (ha, sorta intentional) on here due to last year's game, but he had some good insight in his quotes and gave credit to us and our coaches

https://journalstar.com/sports/husk...e_8fd7922e-8571-5323-bd85-a6af8783284d.html#1

* he loves Martinez "one of the better players in the country already"

“Schematically, they stretch you out,” Fleck said. “That’s why they have 550 yards of offense per game, They put a lot of strain on a lot of different areas. So the one thing you have to do is tackle. If you can tackle and tackle in space, you can usually limit them. They get you in so many scenarios where you’ve got to make the tackle, and if that guy misses the tackle, it's a 50-yard play. That’s what they do really well. Schematically, we were in the right positions. We just don’t make the play.”

That's what Frost does.

I never thought I would say this, but I am starting to like Fleck. He is not the big blowhard that I thought he would be.

His antics and looks at me, over the persona are hard to take, but he seems like a honest, sincere person.

I agree. His antics would drive me bat-**** crazy very quickly, but that's just me. It certainly appears that it's who he truly is, take it or leave it.

Yeah and who is that?
Maybe no one said we have the worst coaches, if you want to parse words, but many were saying last week we have the worst team in college football. Considering the recruiting classes being in the 20s under Riley, it’s not a huge leap to connect the dots.

In the end, I believe he’s a good dude. But man, he is over the top in so many ways. And living here in Minnesota, I hear it a lot.

I like the guy and think he can be good for Minnesota. Just too high strung for me.

Even cooler story is Fleck appeared with his band Motley Lou later that night at the Lincoln Marriott. For real, that is kind of cool he had some cool things to say after the game.

The usual coach speak after a loss that has been recycled a 1000 times over. That dude will be gone in a few years just like every coach at Minnesota this century. They messed up their program when they dumped coach Kill.

Really? They didn't dump Kill. He left the program after repeated epileptic seizures caused by his work schedule. They made the best hire they could. Fleck was lauded as a great hire on this board when he was coaching against Riley. We will see how he looks in a couple years. Lets concentrate on turning our team around.

What he said what was concerning to me was how many freshmen played and how short they were at certain positions. He considers this year "year 1" and last year "year 0". What he meant by that is last year they played a lot of upper class men that have graduated and this year he is relying on young players. He said this was his plan from day 1 and what he has followed in the past. They are the youngest team in America according to him.

You better contact all of the Minnesota papers to let them know they were all wrong. o_O. https://www.thedailygopher.com/2017/1/3/13991452/tracy-claeys-fired-minnesota-football-head-coach
I think why Charlie was hinting at was his tweet where he stood behind the players when he should have kept his mouth shut. While he was tweeting this, the AD was reprimanding the actions of the players. He and the AD were at odds with each other and that made his firing a lot easier.

Claeys needed to just hold his horses on tweeting his support for the player boycott. Players announce boycott, Claeys tweets support, administration publishes the investigative report on the sexual assaults, players read the investigative report, players quickly cancel the boycott, Claeys gets fired.

No Coyle (AD) wasn't going to keep Coach Claeys no matter what. The AD had been stalking Coach Fleck Since he was AD at Syracuse. We miss Coach Claeys defenses. He did more with less.

He’s like all coaches of other teams. If we can beat him consistently, he’s a decent guy. If we can’t, he’s a horrible human being. :)

I absolutely believe this. His recruiting was terrible and he didn’t seem like head coach material. But he was 9-4 after beating ranked Washington State in the bowl game.

I’m not sure he would have been fired so quickly without his tweet. The tweet gift wrapped it for Coyle.

Yes you are correct. You now know more about the situation than about half of the Gopher fanbase.

Claeys knew he was a dead man walking, so he chose to support the players he recruited. Basically all the players wanted was some info. The AD and others weren't real transparent. There were many mistakes made.

Been in twin cities 9 years now and have friends who are die hard gopher fans. We talk about a lot of things when it comes to the gophers.

Makes sense. Claeys had some weaknesses, but he was a very good teacher and strategist.

Agree. Really solid DC. But never saw him as HC material. One of his first moves was to can the OC, which I never understood, and I don’t remember the game, but he had a huge gaffe at the goal line that essentially cost them the game. Don’t remember details, but that was it for Claeys. It was only a matter of time after that game.

Frost speaks with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.
