I admit I am no football play calling expert although I have been a fan a long time and know enough to at least question things. But I admit I don't know the answers.

I have watched SC all year play extremely soft coverage on 3rd down. Even 3rd and longs. Today, on several 3rd and 7s, our corners gave 10 yard cushions and it was a simple pitch and catch for the first down right at the sticks. Simple first down.

Now look, I know Clayton White is a good coach. I know he is a better coach than me. haha. So someone that really understand this explain to me why you would make it so easy for the other team to pick up first downs. It has happened all year but was extremely noticeable today.

Unless I am wrong, I don't think OU was a team that takes a lot of shots down he field and Mateer, while very mobile, didn't seem like he would be very accurate on long balls.

What am I missing?

I am not a Clayton White fan at all...bend and break approach wears our four man defensive line down...soft pass defenders lack speed, quickness, or intuitiveness to cover at the same level of our opponents...we seldom line-up five or more up front and seldom blitz...why not take chances...contain is too often neglected...other teams take their shots on defense and dictate terms to their offensive opponents...playing against our defense is easy for teams to prepare for...teams are laughing at us while our fans "boo".
