I was also at that Deer Creek Dead show when the fence came down. Man what a weird scene. The lot was packed and cops everywhere. Some farmer had sent Jerry a death threat because his daughter supposedly had run off to tour with the band. They played "Dire Wolf" in the 1st set with Jerry singing "Dont murder me, please dont murder me." Soon thereafter all hell broke loose when the yahoos started crawling over the fence. The encore was "The Mighty Quinn", "Come all without, come all with in" was a fitting end to a crazy night. I was also at the St. Louis shows when the deck collapsed at the campground killing a bunch of people. Had tix to both Chicago shows but after everything that had happened leading up to them, and Jerry barely hanging on, decided to sell them and call it a tour.
My first and last (obviously) Dead show was the one in St Louis. I never really have gotten them musically, but I understand the draw to their shows. It was a hell of a good time in St Louis.
Just got that bucket list entry in under the wire.
Don't know if it was the best or worst show I have ever seen, but a couple of years ago Puddle of Mud at the Thompson House in Newport was a trip. Wes Scantlin was so wasted, he stopped the show to go take a piss. He also couldn't follow the playlist and just made up songs as he went along. He came out of the bathroom completely "reinvigorated" to finish the show.
I have seen a musician pack up his guitar during the last song, but there we were.
Rock and Roll, man.
