Conley Needs Snaps vs EKU

I'm not piling on anybody, the reality is the results are what they are. Conley looked decent in limited action so far in his career, we need him to get some action. Maybe it lights a fire for Cunningham, maybe not. Either way Conley needs to play a series or more to shake off the rust.

I agree I would have pulled Malik in the first quarter you could tell he was on his game. He was throwing passes over the receivers heads and 3 ft to the left or right of his receivers. I would have put him back in to start the 2nd half to see if was any better. We can’t get 19 points behind against good teams and expect to come back and win.

Conley should have gotten some snaps against Ole Miss. I’m not necessarily talking about replacing Cunningham while the game was still in doubt, although those thoughts did cross my mind and come out of my mouth at the time. But there was a point of no return in the second half when there was no reason to leave Malik in and risk injury. And…yes, Conley needs some in game reps.

Conley isn’t the answer he would have gotten killed on Monday. He’s not mobile enough and the way the rush was exposing our line he would have been crunched. I’m sorry he’s not a P5 QB. Whose the most popular player on the team? The backup QB.
Part of the blame for Monday’s debacle was MC, a lot was on the O line, and Satt’s play calling was suspect.
There’s also a possibility that Ole Miss is a really good team. They already had a proven offense and he added good players to the D like Campbell who transferred from UGA. And Kiffin is a really good coach and so are the coaches around him.
I do wish they put him so we could put this thought process to rest.

The other reason I thought he should play is it's inevitable Cunningham is injured. Of course not hoping for that.

I hear you though. The kid could have come in and immediately thrown a pic 6

EDIT - Another good point you made, Ole Miss might just be REALLY good. Top 10 good.

I mean I don't know how we can say one way or another whether Conley isn't good enough? I mean in 2018 we all thought Malik needed reps over Puma, but many assumed Bobby knew what he was doing.

I mean Evan only attempted 5 total passes in 2020, how do we just act like we know he's not good enough?

I do agree the backup should get playing time in the event MC gets injured. And we know all to well that’s a real possibility. And EKU is the perfect game for that.

He’s played in 2019 in short stints. It’s was pretty obvious the D figured him out quick and he wasn’t athletic enough to run and with rush. He had a hard time rolling left or right and seeing down field. It usually ended in a sack. That’s from my memory, but he does not have P5 talent. He’s most definitely not a P5 starting QB or he would be our starter.

He was a true freshman that started the year as 3rd on the depth chart. I mean do you think a true freshman that didn't take a lot of 1st team reps is going to be able to figure it out as a freshman? It's been 2 years and we haven't seen him much at all, players get better.

It is no coincidence that after the halftime adjustments; at least our offense was able to execute and score 24 points. Cunningham struggled horribly in the first half, but his own post game comments provide sufficient explanation for his performance ……… they had not prepared for Ole Miss rushing 3 and 4, while dropping back 7 and 8 defensively. There were a number of instances in the first half where he had adequate time in the pocket, but the coverage eliminated his options; the one INT was a result of his ill-advised throw into where there were 3 defenders in the vicinity of the intended receiver.

If 99.99% of us went to. HS game WITHOUT KNOWING IN ADVANCE WHO IS “SUPPOSED” TO NE GOOD we wouldn’t know a 4-5 star player from a car salesman. We might say “that kid is GOOD. But we wouldn’t know “how good”.

And we still don’t.

Some people are “supposed” to be good. Puma comes to mind first. Others are “players”. They just win.

Our “supposed” to be good didn’t show much this week. If they don’t light EKU up early I want to look for some “players”.

As the above video shows. Conley got it done whether he is “good enough” or not.

We need to “get it done” with whoever can do it.

If nothing else, wake the “starters” up by sitting them a while.
