I would say no, but rather extra sets of eyes with specific knowledge. Coaches are now having to do more. Now they have to constantly recruit current team members as well.

In college football, this appears to be very prominent. They seem to fill a few needs with each school using them in their own way. First, the coaching workload has grown, so they are like staff extensions for the primary coaches. Second, they appear to be a way for the coaching staff to be larger than NCAA rules allow in order to give more attention to players and positions. Third, when it is a very experienced coach they can provide some helpful knowhow and Finally, they also seem to be a pool of people who could fill an official coaching job that comes open. Saban seems to use them very astutely. Seems like all the top coaches are using them, and to their advantage. THE OSU seem to have ex-HCs on their FB consultant staff regularly. seems smart.
