Was at the game yesterday and on two big runs by McCarthy the outside lb or cb, couldn't tell which, crashed down the line to the fake and gave up outside contain allowing McCarthy to get outside for long gains. Is this an issue with Schianos swarming D?

Loyal. Both times. You would think after the first over pursuit he would learn. He had a bad game for sure all around.

It's not Schiano's D.

“I don’t call the plays, we have an offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator that calls them. I can chirp in any time I want and say ‘no, let’s do this.’ I trust those guys, they’re great coaches,” Schiano said. “We call plays with the intent to win the game. Everything, all the studying we do all week, all the film studying, all the stuff we do is for one reason: to try to win the game. When we make a call, sometimes they work and it’s great, and sometimes they don’t. That’s coaching, really. … I have total faith in the guys that call our plays on both sides of the ball. I look forward to winning games with those guys.”

wasn't the play call, it was the execution

yes Royal was the culprit at very inopportune times

Once is understandable twice is unforgivable, those really hurt. Would hate to have to watch that in the film room.

It’s an issue against the best teams in the country. But most teams have issues against the best

Here is something I agree with you on. And see my Brilliant! post above. Not saying it was Robert G's intent to do so, but throwing the head coach's name at every problem cannot always be the correct answer.

You agree with me more than you let on. It must be the attorney in you. We all want the same things here:

Focus on stopping power running game and that’s what happens. No win situation. Good playcalling to exploit our emphasis on their RBs.

You can 2 of those three. I'm keeping my family. And we are agreeing a lot less this week. But that's OK. We can all be sunshine pumpers next weekend.

We played Michigan . Not wagner .
The coaches ain’t gonna harp on this as much as our fans. We lost . Move on
I’ve moved but what’s your point?

Whether it’s Michigan or Wagner, doesn’t matter. The players’ job is to contain and in that situation if the QB keeps the ball to tackle him and prevent a 1st down.

He got smoked the first time and Mich / McCarthy picked up a 1st down. Then it happened again.

Containment

My favorite defensive play maybe ever, in regards to RU

RU at Illinois 2021
RU clinging to a six point lead while Illinois driving for what would be the game winning TD, 1:11 left on the clock

a 4th and one, Illinois fakes a run up the middle, the pitch goes outside

Kessawn Abraham takes one step towards the inside, but did not sell out in that direction, maintaining the outside defense

He sweeps outside with the ball carrier and trips him up for a loss, enabling RU to win the game from there on

For some reason I think with todays team that play would have gone for a 10 yard or more gain

Ridiculous comment, of course the coaches are going to "deal" with it. It was a missed assignment Loyal has contain on those plays, dealing with it is moving on to Wisconsin, this was a mistake that is correctable you need to and must correct going forward or it will happen again.

No, no, no--according to some. . . every little single thing that goes wrong in a game is Schiano's fault.

Loyal needed to follow his assignment.
Well, I guess that would be my question. When you watch those plays, it's clear he should have spied the QB instead of running into the line. But if it was his job to contain the QB, why did he do what he did? Is it possible he was doing what he was told and it looked awful because he should have been spying the QB? If yes, then it's on the coaches, not him.

Hopefully these type of assignments will be corrected for the Wisconsin game. If not then we have bigger issues.

There were clear holds on a couple of them (with no guarantee the tackle would have been made if not for the hold) but we also went in recklessly a couple of times as well. Later in the game, we saw RB get a big gain because the outside contain guy was watching QB without the ball. RB went inside him, untouched.

My hopeful take-away is that maybe Wimsatt learns how to rip out the defense's heart like McCarthy did on those runs.

Unless the coach calls him out for it in his presser, we will never know what his real assignment was. I learned my lesson on this by following the OL as close as I had to for many years. Your eyes don't always see what they thought they saw.

I do have a question- on the broadcast, they brought up contain and mentioned that by playing man to man, we give up on contain. Is that true?

He is not "spying" the QB he has outside contain, he is not suppose to allow outside leverage to be lost on his side, that could be covering the QB the HB, a reverse, his responsibility is to is not give up the outside, he needs to not crash down inside, its a simple concept I assume he felt the handoff went to the halfback, and even so he should have maintained outside leverage. It's a mistake, once is understandable twice should happen, Loyal is a good young player he and the coaches will fix this.

Are they following that philosophy this year?
Sometimes things happen in games. Brent Pry was a highly respected DC at Penn State for years before going to Va Tech. Was it his fault that his team lost contain several times against RU last week? Maybe it was the execution and not the scheme?
My intention is not to state that Schiano is the root of all ills on the team, but to start a conversation on the some football topics. I'm a big Schiano supporter and am I believe he will build this team into solid B1G East team.

Schiano has a defensive philosophy of swarm to the football. In an interview last week or so Urban Meyers pointed this out as one of the three things Schiano focuses on.

But having watched Schiano coached teams over the years it seems that sometimes this might lead to over aggressiveness on D. Over aggressiveness might be exploited by other teams.

Loyal did screw up, but maybe he was a little to jacked on swarm which attributed to the screw up.

Just a thought for a rainy Monday.

it's not an usual concept it really pretty simple: Don't make the same mistake twice.
We really do not know what his assignment was. Yeah, maybe he blew it twice.
It's funny- the two areas that have zero room for any error are DB and OL.
QB- is good if they do their job 60% of the time. RB can be 19 runs for 35 yds and 3 runs for 90 and they look great but failed 19 times and often- same mistake mult times.
WR/TE gets 10 targets for 6 catches and 85 yards - they failed 4 times
DB- comes up and makes hits on runs, their guy covered so play goes elsewhere, pass their way and they cover it or break it up and they have a play or two- they failed.
OL- They give up a sack- it is a bad game even though they won their other 69 plays.

The point is- nothing is as simple as it seams.
