PSU does if it beat either of the Big Two, and if not who cares.
No longer as simple. For the foreseeable future, PSU does not play OSU and Michigan in the same season. However, in four of the next five it plays either OSU or Michigan AND two of the three USC, Oregon, or UDub. The problem arises if PSU is among, say, four Big Ten schools with two or fewer losses and PSU hasn't beaten any of the others.

So now we are worrying/complaining about POTENTIAL future scenarios? First world problems.

FIFY. Like it or not, the biggest draw to the center of the Commonwealth is . . . Penn State and its athletics. Most notably, football. Football generates millions of dollars for the local economy. Take away 1/7 of that and the negative economic ripples across Centre and nearby counties will be significant. Is that a reason to play a cupcake who doesn't require a reciprocating home game in their venue? If it keeps Happy Valley happy, then the answer is yes, imho.
Screw the “local economy”. This argument should only be about PSU football.

State College & the locals have made more than they deserved on the back of the football program.

Yep. A clear 1st or 2nd place finish in the B10 (or SEC) is going to pretty much guarantee the postseason.
But looking at history over the last decade+, the chances of identical records at the "breakpoint" (3rd/4th, or 4th/5th place) for in-or-out of the postseason is over 75% (ie, Far more often than not, there will be the need to decide between two teams of identical records. What is going to impact that decision?)

Who knows? No one really. It is pretty much a crapshoot - and that won't change whether there are 4 or 12 or 14 or 16 in the postseason. But there is a pretty good shot that a big disparity in whether one team had high quality ooc games or not will be one of the few true differentiators. What will the folks (including coaches) who loved the idea of gorging on cupcakes think when/if their team is left at home?

Over the last 10 years (not counting 2020) these are the number of regular season losses for teams in the new Big Ten with the best records.
There are 4 years, maybe 6 (if there is expansion to 14 or 16 teams) where Penn State would have an argument for being included in postseason based on record - but they make zero of them unless they win an "eye test tie breaker" on something other than W-L record.

Sure, yes, there will always be 1+ weak OOC teams on a schedule. Year in, year out.

But there should ALSO, IMO, always be one OOC team that is either from (1) a legit power conference or (2) has a legit pedigree. Always.

I know, Michigan didn't do this in both 2022 & 2023. And ditto for OSU in 2024. So it happens. But if we wanted to truly be considered "peers" with the likes of Michigan & OSU, let's try to match their future OOC at least some what.

Among the better teams in the future B1G, I think it's inarguable that we have the weakest upcoming OOC slate of games:
  • Michigan: 2024, 2027 Texas. 2025, 2026 Oklahoma. 2032, 2033 Notre Dame.
  • Ohio State: 2025, 2026 Texas. 2027, 2028 Alabama. 2030, 2031 Georgia.
  • USC: Annualy Notre Dame. 2024 LSU. 2025, 2026 Ole Miss.
  • Oregon: 2024, 2025 Oregon State. 2025, 2026 Oklahoma State. 2027, 2028 Baylor.
  • Washington: 2024-2028 Washington State. 2029, 2030 Tennessee.
  • Wisconsin: 2024, 2025 Alabama. 2026, 2027 Pittsburgh. 2026 Notre Dame. 2028 Utah.
  • Michigan State: 2024, 2025 Boston College. 2026, 2027 Notre Dame.
  • Nebraska: 2024 Colorado. 2025 Cincinnati. 2026, 2027 Tennessee. 2028, 2031 Arizona. 2029, 2030 Oklahoma.
  • UCLA: 2024 LSU. 2025, 2026 Georgia. 2027, 2028 Auburn.
  • Penn State: 2024 WVU. 2027, 2028 Syracuse.
Sir, on this board please don’t let “facts” get in the way of a good “agenda” from the Koolaide drinkers.

PS: Drinkers - I have NO dog in this fight. PSU Football should & will do what they choose, but to die on the mountain that it MUST be done a certain way is a bit perplexing.

I'm not worried about a thing. Someone suggested a scenario and I had a different viewpoint. Maybe you should buy this site from Shannon Terry, then you can decide what is permissible to discuss.

If Penn State schedules another h-h opponent, how many home games would that give them in any given year?

And I wonder if you could face the State College Chamber of Commerce and tell them, "State is scheduling just six home games this year. Hope the Arts Festival is better than ever, to buoy up your lost revenue." Hope you have thick skin.
I could care less about the greedy State College CofC. Are they paying for any of my hotel, travel or other expenses? I think not.

So cut back on the Arts Festival-who cares.

State College needs a F1 race.

For years, SEC and other southern teams have refused to leave the south. To play in the cold where they may be brutalized, injured and humiliated.

How is this any different?

Give it a rest already.

The same people that complain about a week OOC schedule would be the same people complaining if we didn't make the college football playoff due to an OOC loss.

And they’re the same people that spend countless hours telling everyone how bad a coach Franklin is, yet they want him to schedule tougher OOC opponents….hmm, interesting.

And the same people who complain about the State College businesses profiting off of PSU football, then when the business closes and gets torn down for a high rise apartment or parking garage, they complain that State College isn’t the idyllic college town it was 50 years ago.

Complainers gonna complain.

Who's behind the tearing down? Who's the real estate King of State College?

I'm not complainging about CJF at all. He has to do what he has to do for the program. Just win baby.

As for the greedy folks / businesses of State College, that is something to complain about.
