Have they really ever schemed to their roster? No. These coaches come in and install systems but don’t have the right athletes especially at QB where McSorley was it. Clifford was not Trace but they tried to make him so. And Allar ain’t Josh Allen! Same on defense in most cases. Every year just seemed hard.

Franklin wanted Allar back and when he came back he was going to live or die with him. He died with him. Franklin was the problem and I was probably his biggest fan supporter.
I wasn't a hater by any means. I wanted James Franklin to succeed. But the bonehead decisions just kept piling up, and it made it harder and harder to defend him.

To me, this is fundamentally what separates good coaching from poor coaching.

You can't come in and say, "I have a system, and everyone has to adapt to my system."

A good coach takes the tools that he has, and creates a scheme around those tools. Franklin and his various coordinators over the years always seemed to be trying to force a square peg into a round hole.

Manny Diaz was the obvious exception, and that's why I liked him and wanted desperately for him to stay at Penn State. Diaz seemed like he understood the strengths of weaknesses of what he had with his players and he created a scheme that played to their strengths and tried to compensate for their weaknesses.

He died with AK and his scheme not with Drew

I believe this is over-simplified as most contracts depend on the structure of the guarantee. So PSU may not owe a "one-time" payment, but rather an annual payment. Furthermore, in many contracts, this payment is reduced if the receiver of the guarantee takes a new job (and the receiver of the guarantee has a good-faith obligation to look for re-employment - IOW, a guaranteed annual contract can be partially mitigated by future employment depending on structure).

If this is true, it puts a whole different spin on the buyout numbers. However, it seems hard to enforce/monitor... probably leads to legal action.
