I must have missed this but I'm curious as well. That said and somewhat on the other topic I started I don't think Mullen is a good closer right now but maybe he can learn. Heck, Saban doesn't seem like the type of guys that can sweet talk anybody in the recruiting game but he finds a way to convince them to sign - maybe it's the great "fan support" that helps him in addition to his reputation.

I know the FL faithful didn't see him as much of a recruiter either so curious if we have any inside stories to how well he does or doesn't do.

To assess Mullen's recuiting I think you have to compare him to others in similar situations. There is no comparison between recruiting to anywhere in the SEC (minus VU & OM) and recruiting to Starkville MS.

I would say similar circumstances are,

Ole Miss
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State
Washington State

....and we all where he stands head to head with OM last year.

I look at it like this -

1) How did you do head to head against other KY, OM, Vandy, ARK, TN for guys that Bama, LSU, AU didn't want or have room for?

2) How did you do head to head for instate guys that Bama, LSU, AU wanted?

NOTE: He gets a pass on 1 and 2 vs. OM for guys from Panola and MC

3) How did you evaluate the 3-star guys that Bama, LSU, etc didn't want? If UAB, USM, La Tech, UCF, Troy etc. get a bunch of guys that become studs that we passed on, then we didn't do a good job evaluating talent. I don't want to see any of those schools have better lineman or a QB than us b/c especially if they signed them out of HS.

For instance we almost passed on two of our better line prospects in Day and T. Smith. Those guys were last day signees and have been better than most of the guys we went hard after all year.

easier to recruit here than it used to be. Everything about the area has improved socially as well as we now have the best fan support we've ever had and playing in the SEC, whereever that is, is more attractive than ever. Plus I still think all in all that MSU has a slight in state advantage in recruiting over Ole Miss when there is no monkey business going on. Now all that being said, we have some REALLY good players over the past few recruiting seasons, some who have even given us long standing verbal commitments, that we can't close the deal on. That's not a "poor ol MSU" can't recruit situation that's a Mullen and his staff situation. Mullen and staff are just currently weak in the recruiting area and have to improve for us to play with the upper half of the conference. I think if Mullen can get even close talent to what the big boys are getting he can beat them.
