Mississippi State's Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field, the nation's second-oldest campus football stadium, soon will undergo a three-to-four-year phased painting upgrade.</p>

"We're in the process of developing a maintenance painting program designed to preserve the stadium," said Jim Jones, executive director of facilities.</p>

The more-than 90-year-old facility, which has undergone four major renovations and expansions, dates back to 1914 (it was named Scott Field in 1920). Current seating capacity is 55,082.</p>

"Parts of the stadium painted as recently as four years ago by an independent contractor have not performed as well as originally hoped," Jones explained, adding that there were compatibility issues with the paint, primer and metals in areas that have caused flaking, rusting and other corrosive effects.</p>

"We're now finding rust issues, especially on the ramps and metal railings," he said. "These rust spots have also migrated down the concrete in areas that have left permanent stains."</p>

During the first phase of the project, which will begin this spring, these areas will be repainted in the same neutral color.</p>

The first priority will be to paint areas that need protection from the elements and will focus on preventing future rust issues. Additional phases will address and paint areas that are stained, with priorities determined by critical needs, Jones said. Future phases will be determined and incorporated into the plan to coincide with the stadium schedule and weather.</p>

"We will be working with Facilities Management to ensure as little disruption as possible for our fans," said Bobby Tomlinson, associate athletic director for game-day operations. "We want a facility that reflects the pride of our university."</p>

Jones said the timing of the later phases, as well as colors, have yet to be determined.</p> </div> </div>

so that you can find the section you are sitting in?

I asked about this 4 years ago, and I was told that painting the section letter in the lower level was a "minor detail."

before we spend who knows how much money painting the damn thing, how about we spend that money on tv monitors in the walkways, ventilation for the freakin' bathrooms, and stocking the concession stands with enough food and drink to last an entire football game? That'd help a lot more than new paint.</p>

and the other is not. Yes, we need all those things you listed. But, having areas such as the ramps rusting is something that needs attention ASAP.

these areas will be repainted in the same neutral color.

Does that mean the stadium will not be painted java brown as we've been hearing about for months?

Some of the later phases may be java brown, but there certainly isn't any indication of that now.

We've got to have the only sports arena in the world that doesn't post section numbers/letters near the entrance portals so that you actually KNOW WHAT SECTION you're walking into. It's comical, really.

The difference now, is Doc is making a concerted effort to repaint all the metal surfaces that have been neglected over the years.

Almost everything that has been painted brown in the last year has been concrete. Steps on end of Dorman hall, concrete around bottom of cheese store- lots of conrete around the base of buildings. All the signs, bike racks, dont-drive-here posts, and other metalage have been painted black.</p>

It's called uniformity of design -- something very alien to MSU until the late-nineties.

How about spending some money on the plumbing so that the sewage lines and the coke lines aren't connected.
