Could Cutler Be Gone?

Interesting article in today's Sun-Times about Cutler, written by Adam Jahns. Apparently Fox is still "gathering information" to "make the best decision for our organization." Who have they met with? Wait for it...Josh McCown. Fox said "the Bears will explore all avenues at quarterback."

I didn't know this, but if Cutler is still on the roster after March 12th his contract guarantees him $10M more for 2016. Now THAT is interesting.

I am not sure getting rid of Cutler is the best thing right away. But with 10 million smackers on the line I don't think I am going to be surprised if they let him go. Just the idea that they are actively looking at other options says something.

The title of the article; "No Commitment to Cutler" may be right on.

I definitely think someone would take him if the Bears pay most if not all of the contract.

I have heard it said that if Cutler is let go what option do the Bears have at quarterback. That the lack of a plan at QB would preclude the Bears letting Cutler go. If the Bears let Cutler go wouldn't the plan be to get the highest possible pick in next years draft?

If the Bears keep Cutler and the teams doesn't tank, but they are still bad, then they will be in the 7-12 draft range for a long time. Do teams get out of mediocrity-poor by drafting 7-12? Some do, but where would you need to draft to most likely get better and become a contender? It seems to me that drafting top 3 would give the Bears the best possible chance to improve fastest and become a Super Bowl contender.

Let Fox repair the defense with top draft picks, but lose games because of the QB. Then when the timing is right, use that top pick on the QB to right the offense and shoot to the top with a cheap, younger QB and a prolific defense. Isn't this the Seattle/San Francisco way?

The plan would be sign a cheaper, lesser QB who is not an asshat. It's not can we upgrade, it's can we get tgis guy out of here for the locker room's sake.

I find it hard to believe the Bears couldn't just flat out release Cutler and pay what they have to pay him if they want to.

I can't wait till Corey sees this thread. Hahaha!

The Bears certainly would not pay all/most of the remaining money on the contract to trade him.
This is the NFL not MLB...it just doesn't work that way.

Correct, its the Albert Belle situation.

Your entire team gets better by getting rid of one individual, let it go, let Cutler go.

Maybe you know more about this than I do. Then if that isn't an option, a flat out release seems to be the only way. Then they would have to pay him anyway.

If it doesn't work that way in the NFL how does it work?

That is an option they have and the most likely option other than Jay staying for 2015.

If Bears dump him by March 2015, they'll avoid $16 million in guaranteed money (they would still be paying him 2015 money and take sometype of cap hit). If they part ways with him by March 2016, they'll save the final $6 million guaranteed.

I just noticed the discrepency between numbers from the article I referenced and the Sun times one. The salary cap and salary cap implications are confusing at times. Etiher way cutting him before March 12, 2015 saves them a lot of money in 2016.

Agreed. Not to mention it saves a lot of headaches. They save money on Motrin.

You may be right on with this. They are going from a 4-3 to a 3-4 on defense. I am hearing they are going to be looking to sign two linebackers through free agency. Who those guys may be, or if it will actually happen, I don't know.

Epic and SIU:

Sounds like he may be gone too. If not, Fox isn't going to put up with his shenanigans. That is what another article says.
