The CS8 went 2-3 in Week 10, and 5 conference teams are still playing Week 11. 4 of the games will occur in the 4A South Bracket.

Weather looks ideal for the end of October both Friday and Saturday.

Friday
#20 Jerseyville (5-5) at #4 SHG (8-1) 4A
The Panthers knocked off #13 Peoria Notre Dame 28-21 in an upset last week. Four of their five losses have been by a TD or less and they faced 7 playoff teams during the regular season. Only #1 in the South Bracket Centralia defeated them decisively, with Jerseyville falling to the Orphans 50-7 in Week 3. The Panther's attack is led by RB Trevor Tucker, who has over 1,300 yards on the season. SHG is coming off a Bye Week. While the road win at Peoria was impressive, the Panthers don't look to match up well against a big Cyclone squad with plenty of experience led by 3-year starting QB Cam Brinkman and RB-LB Mikey Groesch. SHG 38 Jerseyville 7. Massey: SHG 41-7.

#19 Waterloo (5-5) at #3 Rochester (8-1) 4A
A rematch of the 2nd round playoff game last year which the Rockets won at Waterloo 55-21. The Bulldogs upset Taylorville on the road last week 34-28, after leading 28-3 at halftime. Waterloo threw a lot more in Week 10 than last year's squad, which was a run first team with 2 good RBs. They have a big and mobile QB, Chase Zimmerman, who has a powerful arm and scrambling ability. Last week, he had multiple completions of 40+ yards but also threw 3 INT's and took several sacks on broken plays. Rochester is coming off a bye week and will hopefully get back several players who have been out injured. RB Evrim Tabag went over 1,000 yards rushing Week 9. Rochester 45 Waterloo 14. Massey: Rochester 46-12.

#9 MacArthur (8-2) at #8 Mt Zion (7-2) 4A
A very short road trip for the Generals, who beat Effingham 35-14 at home last week. The last time these teams faced each other was in the 2019 playoffs with the Braves winning narrowly 31-30 in the 1st Round. Effingham and Mattoon are common opponents. Both Mac and Mt Zion beat each school. Mt Zion's last loss was in Week 5 to 5A ranked Mahomet, while MacArthur was blown out Week 9 by Jacksonville. The Generals have big play capability on both offense and defense. They had 2 Pick 6's of over 80 yards last week against Effingham and also scored on a 70+ yard pass play. After battling injuries most of the season, RB Cayden Brown appears to be back and fully healthy. The Braves have rotated QBs all season and they have combined for 1700+ yards and 22 TDs, with only 1 Interception. Turnovers could be critical to the outcome. Mt Zion will have a large crowd. Can the General's fans take advantage of the short trip to offset the home fans? Mt Zion 23 MacArthur 19. Massey: Mt Zion 38 MacArthur 20.

Saturday
#18 Chatham (6-4) at #2 Normal West (8-1) 6A (1 PM)
A rematch of Week 1, when Normal West got the road win 35-26 over a Titan's squad with 21 new starters from a year ago. Normal West ran off 8 straight victories to start the season, with the closest margin after Week 1 being 25 points. They have an excellent QB in Chase Sennett and a 1,000+ yard rusher, Cody Muhlbauer. In Week 9, they faced 7A ranked Normal Community with the game being tied 15-15 early in the 3rd Quarter. Then, the wheels came off, and the Ironmen scored the final 27 points of the game. The Wildcats gave up over 350 yards of rushing. Chatham traveled to Chicago last week and defeated Brooks 50-6. They were able to play the starters for a half and then get the reserves in. QB Mikey Young has thrown for over 25 TDs this season and RB Alfonzo Burrow is close to 1,000 yards rushing. If Chatham's defense can get a handful of stops or force a Turnover or two, this could be an upset for the Titans. Chatham 30 Normal West 28. Massey: Normal West 35-30.

#11 Cahokia (7-3) at #6 Jacksonville (8-1) 4A (1:30 PM)
A rematch of the 2nd round playoff game last year, which Cahokia won at home 36-13. Cahokia defeated East Peoria 47-0 last week. The Comanches have played a challenging schedule, including facing top ranked in 4A Morris Week 9. They lost 46-19 after leading 19-16 at half. Cahokia also narrowly lost to 4A ranked Metamora Week 2. They are led by QB Nigel Gooden, who has thrown for almost 2,200 yards and 26 TDs on the year. Cahokia also has a RB with nearly 1,000 yards rushing. There is one common opponent. Cahokia beat Springfield 40-0 in Week 1. Jacksonville defeated the Senators 42-7 Week 3. The Crimsons have relied on a big play running attack all season, attempting only 26 passes through 9 games. 5 players each have between 366-756 yards rushing, and they have scored 47 TDs. Jacksonville is coming off their most impressive win of the season, a 49-6 demolition of 8-2 MacArthur at home. Both teams have plenty of speed, while Cahokia is likely to be bigger up front. Jacksonville finds a way to win at home. Jacksonville 27 Cahokia 26. Massey: Cahokia 41-20.

Some context of the Jacksonville Cahokia game last year, Jacksonville had 5 trips to the red zone with just one TD, so they were moving the ball. Of course not being able to finish the job is part of the game, but the 36-13 score was a bit skewed.

All.... Offensive stats for the Jerseyville Panthers main rb Trevor Tucker 198-1335 yards 14 td's. (6.7) Impressive as those numbers are what he does on the defensive side as the mlb more imposing.

Young Mr. Tucker is currently 11th in the nation with a 148 tackles and #1 in Illinois. (67 - solo and 81 assist) He was quite active in the PND/Jerseyville game I attended. 19 was his number in that game with 6 solos and 13 on the assist side which included three qb sacks and one fumble recovery. Rushing 23 times for 142 yards and two td's.

I was curious what he did week one when Jacksonville came to town and played the Panthers. The Crimsons had several turnovers but still defeated Jerseyville 34-27. Stats for that game 24-100 yards and three td's. Ten tackles which included 6 solo's. This young man has quite a bit of energy. Ratsy

Continued discussion by the Decatur School Board about potentially moving to just one high school in the near future, due to declining enrollment and budget problems.

Over the last ten years, the combined MacArthur/Eisenhower enrollment has dropped from 2,169 to 1,792.

All.... I think the toughest "sell" wouldn't be getting the two schools agreeing to consolidate but having approval from the CS8. Of course the league has no say on what they do in the Decatur school district but I assume a vote among the other schools would be taken.

Decatur could always go to another conference . I didn't look up travel but the Big 12 might be an option if it came to leaving the CS8. Ratsy

A reconfiguration plan could be voted on by February. However, I doubt, if passed, that it would be implemented as quickly as the '27/'28 school year.

Both Decatur schools were previously in the Big 12 so I would think the transition back would work. That being said...I would like for them to stay in the CS8 even if combined.

All.... Another consequence to consider using football as an example. If the consolidation went through and the CS8 gave them the boot the East goes from six teams to four. If accepted they still have to find one school to join the CS8. A mess either way. I suppose the league could redo East and West with ten teams under the first scenario but then more difficulties getting non con games. I don't think as well adding more crossovers would make many happy. Ratsy

Disagree on the first sentence. I remember when Springfield was talking about building a new school out west for the better-offs... Got dicey, quick.

Imagine trying to "sell" the combining of Lanphier and SE... how would that proposal go? What roadblocks exist? To help you find the answer... let's now add in the criminal activity at/outside a Mac football game this season. Largely speculated at first, then later confirmed by Decatur Police to be partially involving Ike students... who's school cancelled it's varsity season. You can see how this might not be such an easy decision... surely not one without pushback from the community in some pretty hefty capacity. As with Springfield, Decatur schools have an identity attached to them in the community... people are loyal to one of the other believe it or not. Same goes for Champaign/Urbana and Bloomington/Normal I would imagine. Whether you want to see it or not, some people choose Mac over Ike... SE over Lanphier... and so on... These are largely neighborhood schools with kids who grow up in these neighborhoods.

Decatur does have a history of consolidating/closing schools in more modern times however. The most recent being Stephen Decatur in 2000. In the past the school board voted without any say from the community, simply a closed-door board vote. I'm sure that's how it'll go yet again... You know, because why let the community have a say... typical local politics, to say the least, but that's another discussion. I'm also on the side of the fence that says consolidation seems necessary at this point, btw.

Therefore, though, it likely won't take any selling at all. But that doesn't mean there won't be backlash...

It should be noted the statewide enrollment number has declined by some 10% over the past 10 years. That includes in large suburban districts up north at nearly a 7% rate. Making Illinois the 4th highest decline in students statewide in that time frame behind only Mississippi, WV, and NH.

I agree, Mac alone has earned their place, imo. Surely it's easier to find 1 school versus 2 quickly...

What is the governing setup of the CS8? Can anyone explain how this would work? Do they vote? Is it a bylaw compliance situation only that determines your existence in the conference? Do we have any examples of this in the past?

That would be wonderful for the Central and Southern portions of the state. At 1,792, they would be one of the larger 7A programs. Thereby giving Edwardsville, Chatham, Normal Community, Alton, Belleville et al some more competition at the same enrollment level

MTZ, as discussed before ad nauseum, would be an excellent competitive addition to all CS8 sports. Unfortunately, this is unlikely to happen anytime soon as it would mean the death of the Apollo.

I suppose if MTZ joined the CS8, T'ville could also. M-S would likely join the Big 12, but Mattoon, Charleston, and Effingham are in no man's land and effectively marooned away from meaningful competition (a la Quincy).

And for what it's worth, given the difficulty of non-conference scheduling, I imagine more CS8 cross-over games are being discussed.

All.... The Morning Huddle does a segment with HC Dambacher weekly. He mentioned (and I paraphrase) this week that the Titans have grown and are not the same team they were were when they played the Wildcats in week one. I have always found that type of coach speak interesting. It's valid if ones team gets better as the season unfolds as the Titans have but CW went 8-1 and I imagine that statement would apply to them as well. Not sure how this game will end up but advantage Normal West playing this game at home.

Agreed it's coach speak but in defense of Coach Dambacher - he is only talking about his team. He isn't speaking to/for his opponent. Could also be said that Glenwood had a lot of room for growth given the lack of full-time varsity experience that many of their starters came into that week 1 game with.

If I had to put money on the game I'd go with NW, but since I don't I'll just follow from a distance.

Crickets, go figure. I forgot grandpa holds onto a grudge more tightly than an ex... I'll presume you meant SHG doesn't want more crossover games. More chances for the Cycs to lose games "in-house," right?

Speaking of in-house... we haven't gotten any "rat" JV updates this year... hmm... perhaps the well is... uh... experiencing drought-like conditions? I'm sure the dwindling enrollment on Washington Street will be the "usual suspect." What was that score I saw the other day... Rockets 60, Cyclones 8... ope!

I think anything from 2-3 to 5-0 is realistic.
100%... it's nice to see all 5 with a realistic chance at winning. Obviously a couple we can toss in the Win column early, but the other 3 swing games should be competitive at worst. About all we can ask for this time of year, imo.

I just realized that was SJR picks, which exclude Mac...
Mac has the ability to thump MTZ... that's in their bag for sure. Whether they will remains to be seen. Inconsistency can hurt like hell this time of year. Suffice it to say, I won't be shocked if this game is 43-0 Mac, 27-26 either team, or MTZ by 20...

Having seen Southeast's and Lanphier's low numbers this year, I wonder when one of them could become the next Eisenhower.

Also, if Decatur is likely moving to a single high school, that would seem to me to be a disincentive for Eisenhower trying to have a varsity schedule next season.

February 2027 is the vote. So at best we know 4 months in advance before kickoff next year. But we all know it won't move that quickly... if consolidation happens I saw it said elsewhere, it likely wouldn't take place until 2028/2029 school year at best I would imagine. The staffing issue attached to this Roadmap 2030 proposal is also a very interesting wrinkle to this. 82 certified teacher variances and a 6+ million operating deficit. That's a tough hole to climb from in that community, imo, without major influence from outside... the state and/or fed.

They're live streaming public feedback sessions on December 7 and January 25... Will be curious to hear what Decatur residents think... My wife's mother is a retired DPS teacher. She has her own thoughts.

Hmmmmm Glenwood/West matchup favors Glenwood in several ways: 1st... Psychologically... West has already beat the Titans once and with these young kids that know they've won once so we all know kids are different today then when were in high school... Glenwood has grown up a bit while playing a tough schedule. 2nd... Rat Poison... They have been hearing all week that Glenwood will not be a problem... From friends, family, just about anyone except the coaches I hope... Look at BC last season... They had to play the 3 teams that beat them in the regular season during the playoffs and they defeated them all!!! Why did that happen? The same reasons I listed above...

Lanphier has had more success than Southeast historically but neither has a bright future in football and maybe in the CS8! Rivalries be damned but I would vote on kicking Lincoln, DMac, Ike, Lanphier and Southeast... They are dead weight football speaking... This will leave 8 conference teams with the ability to play 2 good non-con's... This will be also be helpful should the state revamps the playoffs allowing every 4-5 team in! The days of the 2-7/3-6 participation playoffs will be a one-and-done.

The decatur schools will consolidate and thats why the CS8 should do the axing now!~~~

Just curious why you'd vote out Mac?
11 playoff appearances in 5A since Spates arrived in 2008. Same number as Springfield High... The other schools you listed have a combined 4 in that time frame... since 2008. No other team, or coach, has beaten each of the big 3 in that time frame. (SHG, Rochester, Glenwood) Spates and his Generals have beaten each at least once since 2008.

Like I said above... i believe Mac has earned a place in the league. And most importantly, nothing remotely near "dead weight football speaking."

Why vote out any schools for performance in sports? This isn't the English Premiere League with relegation.

who's going where this weekend? just for the usual cs8 guys on here. 100% sure i'll be at jax tomorrow.

i'm on rochester's pass list and a former boss of mine asked me to bring a lawn chair and sit in the ez with him. contemplating this heavily.

also have a former player of mine wanting to come sit on the jchs bleachers with him to watch his senior son play.

I'll be at Rochester tonight. Wish I could see Jacksonville vs Cahokia tomorrow but will be out of town.

Frankly, I think Lanphier, Southeast, and Eisenhower should join the Sangamo Conference. The existence of Maroa- Forsyth eliminates the distance issue which would be presented. All of these schools would be travelling to Quincy, Jacksonville, or Decatur. Pittsfield is closer than Quincy. auburn is just one town past Chatham. This may give the perennial bottom dwellers an actual opportunity to win from time to time. And it will make MF, Williamsville, and the every other year of Auburn or Athens making a run that much stronger when it comes to scheduling. Byron (3A) plays Dixon (4A). PND (4A) plays Normal Community (7A). So class sizes should not be an issue. And let's be blunt, I can count on one finger the number of winning seasons collectively amongst Lanphier, Southeast, and Eisenhower over the past 10 seasons. These 3 schools are a collective 105-403 over the past 20 seasons, an average of 1.75-6.71 record (COVID skews the season records.) And a grand total of 2 victories in 4 playoff appearances. It is is embarrassing how bad these programs have been over the past 2 decades

I'll be at Mt. Zion v. Mac tonight...

Won't make a game tomorrow. Kids have Halloween plans I need to be a part of. Dad life takes precedence, I'm sure you all understand that!

Big hopes here... Mac and Jax win... then they do us all a SOLID favor and schedule Mac/Centralia, Jax/Rochester, and SHG/Metamora in a manner that we can all go see all 3 games! Big ask, I know... but fingers crossed!

As always, safe travels to teams and fans alike tonight and tomorrow.
