Brutal loss. Too many missed chances after knocking out Madbum. Rizzo is MIA. Now the whole pen will be shot. Looks like Bryant and Baez will have to carry them

Can they rebound or is it wait until next year? Again.

Regardless, I think the Nationals are the team to beat. They are heating up.

Sorry but they are done. After days of whining last week that they had to play the Giants, the notorious jinxing Cubs fan from work said yesterday "we're going to sweep!"

Blah blah.. they lost a game on the road that frankly most thought they would lose anyway. Because they lost in that fashion may sting a bit, but curses are as real as ghosts and zombies. If they don't win in 4, they will win behind Lester back in Chicago.

Just a thought. Since the bullpen for the Cubs has been used quiet a bit is there anyway Hendricks pitches tonight?? It would be nice to see Lackey go deep into the game but if he gets in a jam maybe bring in Hendricks? He only threw a couple innings the other night so why not bring him in?? Thoughts????

I am starting to think Coach Joe out coached himself last night. Batting Ross instead of La'stella. Also not putting in Edwards at the end, it was only a matter of time until Montgomery got hit after that many innings. Also could of Baez gotten to 3rd in that last inning? It may have been a close play but in extras should push the envelope.

Pulling Arrieta after the sixth (97 pitches) was odd. The bullpen was good in the seventh, but why use that many arms when one of the best pitchers in baseball is pitching well and could go another inning or two?

Baseball managers can't help themselves. Always trying to out think the room.

Arrieta was beginning to get hit hard and he was leaving the ball up more than he did early in the game. I do agree that he overmanaged by simply not going with the setup guy in the 8th and the closer in the 9th.

Geez, i hate the Cubs as much as the next guy, but that was just 1 game. They could come out and put up 8 runs against Moore.

If Maddon tries to pull Lackey out of this game early, he better be ready to fist fight on the mound. Lackey and his veneers wont leave until his arm falls off. He is a douche but a helluva competitor.

Only reliever not available is Montgomery...quite a few pitchers only threw to a batter or two

Arrieta should have been pulled after 5...was lucky to get through six...Strop, Wood, Rondon and Grimm threw less than 10 pitches and even Chapman can throw an inning if need be...Should be fine for tonight...at least thats what I am trying to convince myself of

Right. However Hendricks didn't throw many pitches the other night. If Lackey can get 5 innings then Hendricks comes in.

Cubs still -470 for the series.....but, they need to finish the Giants off tonight. This is why they brought in Lackey. Moore has been okay for the Giants but he is a guy the Cubs should be able to get to. If it goes to game 5 the Cubs will very likely have to face Bumgarner again for 4-5 innings.

The bullpen being shot??? Not really, most of those guys barely threw last night. Now Montgomery is done for a couple days the rest will be fine. To say they are toast is laughable.

Madison is the best manager in baseball. I am a red Sox fan but would take this guy in a heartbeat. I never felt like he over managed, he is a good one and I don't think anyone gets second guessed more than BB managers.

Maddon is pretty good too but last night felt like a bit of over-managing. I felt before the bottom of the 8th that Chapman needed to be in to start the inning....didnt work out

Regardless, I think the Nationals are the team to beat. They are heating up.

What was encouraging was that when the 8th inning took a turn they didn't just implode like past cubs teams. They settled down, Grimm retired the last two batters, and they gave them a chance to tie it up in the ninth.

On another note, I have no idea why Madden pulled Jason Heyward before the bottom of the 8th. It might have made sense if he had Almora pinch hit for him, but considering how good Heyward is defensively this just seems to have been a monumental blunder. While Almora is good defensively, with Heyward back there I can see the catch being made.

No way, no how Bumgarner is pitching again in game 5. This isn't the world series and they have to play as though they are going another two series. I understand if they lose that game, they are done, but usually you see aces pitch on short rest ONLY in the World Series.

They are still up 2-1 and have Lackey and Lester scheduled for the next 2 starts, if needed. Plus Chapman only threw an inning last night, as all of the other relievers threw 1 inning or less also except for Montgomery. So the Bullpen should have everybody except Montgomery available. I am more worried about their bats than their arms. need to get Rizzo and a few of the other big sticks doing some damage. Bryant, Baez and the pitchers can't shoulder all of the offense.

Cubs looking like last year's Royals comeback squad! Zobrist and Baez in the clutch. Wow is right.

Bochy is HOF manager and all, but he spit the bit tonight when he took Moore out. If Bumgarner or Cueto had been cruising like that, no way he takes them out. And it's not like the Giants' pen didn't give him ample warning that he was playing with fire.

Fly the W!

That kind of win can set the tone for the rest of the playoffs not to mention it gets the pitching order back on track to start the next series. Huge win!
