I'm very interested in everyone's opinion on moving Cunningham to receiver next season if Purdy comes in and leaves no doubt about who our best option at quarterback is. I believe he is way to valuable to not play somewhere. You take Tutu Atwell , Hawkins, Hall, a couple burners we have at receiver , here already or coming in, Cunningham Burns, wow. Every single player I just named and a couple I didn't are 100 % proven threats to score every time they touch the ball. That's crazy. At least 6 or 7 that we have seen do it this season. So Cunningham has to be in the game in some fashion because he makes us that much more dangerous. Damn we have some speed. I know of 3 or 4 incoming players that have the speed to get desperation also. That's the key to Satt's system. Recruits don't have to always have 4-5* 's next to their name but they need to be fast.
Oregon showed how dangerous team speed can be the year they lost the title game by to Auburn. They killed everyone else and almost won a championship. I haven't compared them but I would bet there was a big difference in the number of *'s

Cunningham is NOT moving to receiver. Cunningham will be difficult to replace as starter in this offense. He's a gamer, the players love him and he will get better. His only knock to me is not getting the ball out sooner. Once he learns to throw the ball away when nothing is there, he will be the clear #1. Moving to receiver is NOT happening.

Great post. I agree he will be very difficult to unseat. However it may not be a situation where Purdy beats him out in the off-season. Unfortunately Cunningham is injury prone. We've been lucky so far that none have been serious but every game except Virginia he got hurt. It may be a Purdy has to replace him for a couple games and he kills it. I would think you stay with him and get Cunningham in the game however you can. I mean lets be real about it. Cunningham's strength is in his legs. When he has the ball in space he's a nightmare. He's has a lot of work to doin all other aspects of the position. Throws a good deep ball, suspect division maker, average passer in short and intermediate routes. I love him but his effectiveness is with his legs.

Cunningham is injury prone, but he can learn to slide or run out of bounds. One of his strengths is his ability to run the ball, but he also protects the ball. He has 8 TD's with 2 INT"s on the year and completing 61.63% of his passes, which is pretty good. His overall quarterback rating is 185.84 which is almost excellent. He's not moving positions and Purdy's competition is beating out Conley for back up in my opinion. I think Purdy would have a fighting chance if he was here in the Spring. If he's coming Mid-Summer it takes awhile to catch up to the speed of the game and he will be trying to unseat a redshirt Junior who has been through on the job training the last two seasons. What I like about Conley is that he appears to see his target and unleash, where as Cunningham may see the receiver but he holds on to the ball and then decides to throw.

Regardless, these kids are going to have to put in work in the off season.

If Cunningham had enough attempts to qualify, his pass efficiency rating of 185.84 would rank 4th in the country behind Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagavailoa, and Joe Burrow, and just ahead of Justin Fields of Ohio State. He’s definitely not moving positions, even if Purdy is the second coming of Peyton Manning.

He will be a R-Jr next year and I'm with several of you--next year will be a 4 way battle to see who starts.....MC, EC, CP, and TW.

Cunningham is our best QB currently and for the future. Conley will be a seasoned back up next year who will have the added blessing of an offseason and second Spring practice to get better. Then both Webb and Purdy het to play 4 games. 2021 we will have the deepest and best QB group in the entire nation! Slide Malik slide!!!

Good grief that sounds like the LJ talk. Neither are WRs their QBs. And no freshman will unseat MC because he’s improving every game. He even ran out of bounds during the UVA game. He lost his happy feet. It’s funny what good coaching can do.

We're barely through half of the season and you're already replacing our very good QB with someone who isn't even on campus yet. MC is not changing positions nor do we want him to change. And everyone gets banged up at times. Not sure where this nonsense is coming from. If we end up having someone that phenomenal waiting in the wings, good for us. But it's basically MC's team at this point. Next year's talk can wait for next year.

As I said before I love his game it just scares. The #%\.$ out of me how many times he has had to leave a game due to injuries. Seriously the Virginia game is the only one I can remember where there was zero injuries to him. I'm not wishing anything on him I hope we can red shirt Purdy. As for this being similar to the LJ thing. LJ didn't leave every game with an injury. All I was trying to do was get some opinions about hypetheticals . anyone who thinks I'm exaggerating rewaycj this years games and count how many times MC has to come out of games. He just scares me. That is all.

Really. No chance?

I love Cunningham and he has been fantastic this year. He’s tough as nails and a winner.
That said, saying Purdy or any Freshman has no chance to win the starting job next year is shortsighted. I agree that MC is not changing positions and will almost surely be the opening day starter next year but Purdy has a legit chance to take over the job during the season.

Just do a little research on his brother Brock, who after taking over the Iowa St starting job early in the season tore the Big 12 up and was Conference Freshman of the Year, leading them to a 7-1 record including a Bowl win. And Chubba is more physically gifted than his older brother.

I wouldn’t mind a repeat of 2004 when Lefors carried the load but Brian Brohm got plenty of meaningful playing time.

Here’s some info on brother Brock.

Anyone want to guess why MC doesn't have enough attempts to qualify for that ranking. I just wanted thoughts on worst case scenario's like one of these times its serious and he's out for a few games. I brought up Purdy because the kid is a beast and I believe he is our future. Can pass and run at a high level. Plus he's like 6-4 230. I think I'm close on that. That's a big *** boy. Settle down bros. I'm not trying to replace anyone. Look at the Breed/ Bridgewater deal. There are only like 3 qb's in the whole nfl that would return and get their job back after their backup goes 5-0 . Just hypo's guys.

Cunningham has improved so much. College football is really built for mobile QB’s. They just put so much pressure on the defense to always be in the right spot in both the run and passing game. It is a really unique skills set.

Cunningham size hurts him in the passing game, but his quickness and speed are hard to duplicate. However moving forward his experience is the most important factor. He is still learning he doesn’t have to be great in the passing game.

Reality is anything can and Dora happen in football. Jalen hurts won a title almost went unbeaten in 2 straight seasons and still got replaced. Even with his stellar play at Oklahoma I still dont hear anyone questioning Saban because it was the right move going forwArd for his team. So anything can happen. Besides a couple of stinkers by Cunningham and most of the guys on this board would be calling for his head anyway so you know. For all we know Purdy could come in and blow us all away and realistically give us the best chance to win. What I wanted to know was how would you guys feel about getting Cunningham in the game anyway we could in case of an unforeseen situation. Me personally, I believe that if he were not our best option at q.v. at the time rather than let him waste his talent on the sideline we should find a way to get him on the field. I don't care if he plays rb as long as he is out there to make us as dangerous as possible. I guess I shoulve worded it differently. Sorry

I agree with you about Purdy. He looks like he’s going to be a star at the college level and very possibly beyond. Time will tell. I just can’t see MC moving to any other position. He’s too good a QB, no matter how crowded the room might be, not to mention his experience. And as Cards First stated, he’s improving every game.

Preseason I thought the defense of Cunningham on this site as an answer versus Pass was borderline sacrilege and my position was it was because Cunningham couldn't throw a deep seam route on his best day; what I never envisioned is that somehow despite having a lesser arm than Pass-and Conley--he throws a better deep ball.

Cunningham isn't going anywhere. I swear sometimes people are slow learners but think back to all of the quarterbacks at Louisville since 2000 and only two came out completely unscathed by injury...Dave Ragone who I swear was part Mule and Lamar who is undoubtedly descended from panthers and could land on his two feet if you flipped him straightjacketed out of a helicopter. He fits what Satterfield seems to want and while he sometimes rushes his mechanics and throws an ugly ball, for some reason it seems to land in the right hands. Heck the INT on the first drive against Clemson should have been a TD and inexplicably just went through Atwell's mitts at the goal line.

It's a mistake to think a quarterback has to check every box that says he has the frame of Cam Newton, the mind of Peyton Manning, the speed of Lamar and the arm of Aaron Rodgers. Cunningham fits what the offense demands aside from being less than durable.

I see his progress also I do. He just needs to learn when to slide and get rid of the ball. And we need to protect him better. Still giving up way too many hits and sacks. Like I said I hope we can rs Purdy. Our line just needs to improve. It sickens me how much time some of these qb's get. They have no idea what its like to run for their life. Maybe next season we will be able to field a formidable o-line. If given proper protection Cunningham and our backs would put up video game .numbers . our skill positions will be sick again next season.

Agree on your current assessment of Cunningham and especially your comment about Ragone being part mule but a lot of Cards fans seem to forget that Purdy is not only 6’4 225 and can throw darts downfield, he’s also an incredible athlete who can beat you with his legs too. Hence him being ranked the #5 “Dual Threat” QB in the Nation.

Time will tell but it’s ok to embrace both. Just like walking and chewing gum.

I like how everyone is dismissing Conley and Webb. Webb must be pretty confident in his abilities or why would he stay committed with higher ranked FR committed and what seems to be 2 quality guys here. CSS has said repeatedly he doesnt care who starts. Who can move the offense is who will start. BTW, these are good problems to have!

From what we’ve seen with our own lying eyes, if a tFr QB starts our first game next year one of two things have happened:

1. The injury bug has hammered us. Or,

2. We’ve proven the “star” system TOTALLY flawed because we have the next Trevor Lawrence.

Mid season might be a different story. ;)

It probably depends on what Puma plans to do. If Puma decides to transfer, we still need QB's on roster. It would be nice if T.Webb or Purdy could enroll in January. That's a huge advantage for the QB.

I love the play 4 games then keep the redshirt rule. I see Webb and Purdy both taking advantage of that next year. As I said before, 2021 we will have the deepest and best QB group nationally.
