Genuinely very curious: has any serious cases or deaths been linked to a sporting event (practice, games, etc)?

Appears that there are cases but mostly asymptomatic.

Has anyone heard anything different?

I agree, one death is too many. Just curious if there are stories if Hs, college, pro athletes having really bad experiences w the virus in which they got the virus from their sport.

Since it’s practically impossible to pinpoint when someone contacts the virus it’s impossible to say if an athlete has had a bad case in which they contacted the virus from their sport or from sport trainings.

I assumed the question was about athletes catching the virus at their games, practices, training sessions, etc. and the severity of their symptoms.

Yes...the athletes.

Sorry, I should have read your original post closely because it is pretty clear that's what you meant.

I have found some articles about a few soccer players and a coach dying from the virus in other countries, but I doubt you could trace it back to a match or practice.

This is the best correlation that I can give. We have been back east already this summer for lacrosse. It is not the contact that a lineman would have all the time but there is definitely contact with the teams my son plays and there are plenty of times there are multiple players right next to each other. They have been doing events in MD, DE and IN since the end of June. I have talked to guys that cover those events in MD and DE locations. They have not heard of any outbreaks among any of the teams or parents watching as of yet, like I said it has been almost a month now since these events started. What I saw last week was that wearing masks and distancing were pretty good, players can not hang with their team in between games need to stay in their cars and distancing. From what it sounds like in IN is that Grand Park is packed an a regular basis between baseball and lacrosse and no word of anything with outbreaks there either.

Only thing I've heard is the Cubs assistant coach who said he had a bad a case of it.

I'd think NFL camps starting up will give us a good gauge of statistics/risks from starting up again.
