Has anyone spoken of Riley as being a great coach in the last 5-10 years. I hear commentators, talking heads, reporters describe him as a nice guy all the time, but they stop short of praising his coaching success. I realize there is not much to choose from in his resume - but is there any documentable evidence of somebody praising his coaching ability?

Seriously, I could have sworn I heard Glen Mason say he was a great coach last week vs Purdue. I will have to re-watch.

Gosh not everyone is following Frost. So what are the odds he coaches on Saturday?

You haven't paid close attention then, just about everyone lauded coach Riley.

You're not looking for facts though so carry on.
What are the “facts” that support Riley being a successful head coach? He’s lauded for his personality - certainly not for his records as HC.

If you have facts supporting his head coaching prowess and success, just let me know.

Of course they have...especially current and former coaches. Those guys all compliment each other in public. It is the smart thing to do.

My thought on Riley is that he IS a great x's and o's coach on both sides of the ball. He knows a ton about the game in addition to being a great human being and other coaches respect that tremendously. The issue for MR IMO has been that his assistants aren't all necessarily up to his level of coaching and he lets them have too much say in how they do their jobs. He appears to me to be a "hands off" manager in contrast to Tom who was a micromanager. If you watch him during the game, he doesn't even seem to have anything to say to his coordinators. With the right assistants and coordinators that works. With a weak link or two it becomes a problem.

Be careful about calling him a great human being. A couple of posters on here will call you out for it and demand that you provide proof.

Agree somewhat.

The weird part about that, though, is that he has churned his coordinators and assistants for not getting it done.

For a guy with a huge amount of experience and connections, that's the part I really don't get about this whole situation.

If he's going to let the coordinators do their thing, what the hell was Banker doing here? Hank Hughes? Bruce Read? And Langs?

OP didn't ask that. And no, he wasn't/isn't lauded for just his personality.

Usually if anyone said anything remotely positive about his coaching ability it was usually followed with excuses like...he just doesnt have the talent pool to work with or some **** like that. Well they're out of excuses now.

You posited the argument, dawg. Now you're asking me to google something to support yours?

I was clear in my OP...

You haven't paid close attention then

You then tried to change the discussion...

What are the “facts” that support Riley being a successful head coach? He’s lauded for his personality - certainly not for his records as HC.

If you have facts supporting his head coaching prowess and success, just let me know.

Which was immediately shot down...

So ya, google.com is something you should use. Unless, you want to make a wager...

is there any documentable evidence of somebody praising his coaching ability?

On the "documentable evidence praising his coaching ability".

LOL. Post some facts to prove Riley isn't a mediocre coach. What is it with you and asking people to bet you on the internet? Are you low on funds?

That isn't the topic to which I replied to. Plenty of funds in my possession, I'm not gonna do the work for you trolls.

He is great at coaching, his record just doesn't show it. Same as...She is really hot...once you get to know her.

Nope, and there's more to support my stance to the OP. You can move the goalposts all you want, I'll enjoy it.

I'm glad Joel Klatt is respected on this board. Since his opinion matters...

Oh another tweet, very informative stuff abut Riley being a great coach and all.

I think most people who say these things are honestly just wanting to be nice to a individual they know is a nice guy. There's nothing wrong in that but reality is, he's not a great coach as others say. Sorry but history proves this. His time here proves this.

Very informative indeed.

OP was proven wrong, you've been proven wrong and the other troll has been proven wrong.

You are a true piece of work. Also, you're posting tweets from 2014.

Facts are facts.

Oh, now there's a timeline, too funny.

You need documented evidence that people said that.

Just know, after you document it, the goalposts will continue to move.

They always do!
But really, I can't remember anyone in the media saying anything bad...the closest might have been something like "wow, what an odd hire" or something like that, but nothing bad about MR. Not that I remember.

But, but, but, they only talked about him being a nice guy! Wait, did I do that right?
