Dad New Vehicle help (commuting vehicle)

So I am looking to buy a new vehicle. I have a 2013 Lariat F-150 that I love but it’s a boat and I don’t use it anymore for anything but commuting and it’s about 30 mins one way. So gas isn’t that efficient and and it’s a ***** parking in some areas. Looking for a small to midsize SUV. Have looked at the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda CRV, and Subaru Forester. Anyone with any experience in these brands or any recommendations with others. Subaru and Honda win the MPG but don’t come with a lot of options. The Hyundai has about every option under the sun and has really good warranties.

Forester is on of the leading cars for lesbians (same with outbacks) ..so there's that. Buddy just got a hybrid Rav4 and it's pretty nice and gets great gas mileage.

I need to check out the hybrid tab 4. My issue is I am weak and end up wanting every bell and whistle like a sucker.

Buddy has whatever trim package is their highest (Limited maybe?) and it is pretty nice. Nice sound system, nice driving features like lane-keep, adaptive cruise, etc. Nice NAV.

But, you say you want all the bells and whistles, but you drove a Lariat trim?

I like the bells and whistles. But I also draw the line in the 50 k range. Plus the Lariat has heated and cooled seats in 2013. That’s cutting edge

I like the Santa Fe’s.

You could consider a wrangler JL unlimited in Sahara trim. It can fit 3 car seats or boosters across. Freedom tops are easy to take off. Might still preserve some cool points. We have a JL Jeep as a 3rd vehicle. Everyone enjoys it on the weekends. The 2.0 turbo/8 speed/mild hybrid gets excellent mileage and all JL’s have auto start stop.

Or just keep the truck until the 2020 or 2021 full electric f150 comes out.

Wife has a Hyundai Santa Fe Sport (no 3rd row), about 5 years old now. Would not buy again. Rides like a turnip wagon, sluggish response on the throttle, and lots of trim pieces have broken or cracked (back lower part of center console, one of the shifter sliding covers, plastic part covering the bottom perimeter of the seat)

It does have all the bells and whistles, and was a decent price, but we won’t be buying a Hyundai again.

I’d probably bump to a F350 or F450. 30 minute commute seems short, so why not enjoy your ride. Parking-smarking, you don’t have to worry about gas mileage again because it’s a diesel. Get the King Ranch with massaging seats.

I know Hyundai vehicles have always been reliable but they are starting to up their interior. I really like the Acura’s but we drive a lot and I don’t want to pay a lot for a vehicle that will have 100000 pretty fast. We have an Outback and like it but don’t know if I can bring myself to get the forester. Just seems boring.

The Bronco is still such a mystery we know it will be out in 2020 but nothing specific as far as specs. I believe we will see a raptor ranger in the next couple years.

I have a Mazda CX-5 crossover suv. You can park it anywhere, it gets great gas mileage on highway and city, and I have the top level package with nav leather seats etc. Looks like it costs 10gs more than paid for it. Had it for 4 years and been a great car so far. It is on a car frame so handles really well and is very zippy.

How are we describing "bells and whistles" because a Forester Touring should have damn near every bell and whistle imaginable. Hell, I have a 4 year old Impreza and while it doesn't have EyeSight, it's got plenty to keep me happy. My dad has a 2 year old Outback Touring and it's got plenty of bells and whistles on it too.

They come in a Lariat package which will have leather. You can get the Technology pack in XLT or Lariat with adaptive cruise and navigation. Rain sensing wipers, bling spot monitoring, lane keep assist and curve control(roll stability) lots of bells and whistles. The FX4 package for those that like to trail ride is something similar to the Toyota crawl mode which is an off road cruise control.

speaking of adaptive cruise...I'm on the fence about that particular technology. It beats tapping the brakes when you approach a slower vehicle but it can get aggressive in braking as well and I've even had it brake when it picked up the scent of a car in the other lane. Do the brake lights come on when it brakes aggressively? If not, the person behind you has no idea you're slowing down quickly. I could see how someone could get in trouble in the right situation. And, you can get behind slower traffic and just tail them at 60 mph until you figure out you're only going 60 mph instead of 75. There should be some kind of aural and visual notification that it's on. I get busy working while I'm driving! I need notices. I'm on the fence on it. Leaning towards preferring to drive the car myself.

I have a 2010 Lincoln MKT that has adaptive cruise and have driven several ford with the same system. They all have a visual aid that tells you when it is taking control and sounds the alarm when hard braking occurs. I’m sure the brake light comes on when it is working as well. If you have this feature and lane keep assist the car is practically driving itself.

well, I was in a rental...ford focus. probably the bottom of the quality for adaptive cruise. I've had it in other rentals but don't recall any aural or visual warnings. I believe you but I just haven't seen it yet.

Kid has a crosstrek with all the bells and whistles. She’s a hippie and it seems Subaru’s are standard equipment.

I tried to push her into looking at the Kia Sorrento Or sportage, but she’d have none of it.

I will say that the Subaru’s resale value is amazing though.

My grand plan is to drive the Arcimoto until the truck is available then make the case that the kiddo needs her own daily driver. The Rivian looks fantastic. If Tesla stumbles on delivery of the truck then I could be convinced...

I am very interested in the rivian. I think it looks good and has a good range. My possible commute could be upwards of 60 miles one-way and that would easily get me there and back.

The proposed towing numbers look insane, too.

We had an MKZ before the Model X - Advanced Auto Pilot is on an entirely different level. I am generally skeptical about Narrow Artificial Intelligence, but this thing is getting close even with the lower power processing built into last years models.

With 21X capabilities over the previous hardware, these new boards will I believe be capable of nearly full autonomous driving - sensors if anything will hold them back.
