how much water do you/should you drink a day?

There are a bunch of overweight women at work who are trying to drink a gallon of water a day to help them lose weight. I assume it's to suppress their appetite but a gallon seems like a little much.

8 glasses of 8oz of water is what I have read is suggested by most. I would guess I get close or a little more than that every day.
Drink four 16.9oz of bottled spring water every day...You should drink the first bottle within the first 30 minutes after you get out of bed.
