Daily Wrestling Talk - starting with 165

Trying to interject some daily talk prior to the season. So starting with one of our leaders and the only wrestler in the top 10 P4P, Alex Dieringer. So taking a look at the top ranked wrestlers at each weight, who will our wrestler face during the year, and predicting where our wrestler might finish.

Alex gets a to a quick start facing the second ranked wrestler this Sunday at the NWCA All Star match. It is hard to predict how a wrestler will perform after moving up but by all accounts a drop off is not expected for Alex. He will face Mike Moreno of ISU who is ranked 3rd and Nick Moore of Iowa who had a great regular season but didn't place in the NCAA's.

No one else is definitely on our schedule unless Storley of Minnesota is truly moving down. Others of note in the weight:

Pierce Hagar placed 8th last year. Isacc Jordan and Dylan Palacio are both ranked quite high but didn't place at this weight last year. Bo Jordan is the wild card as he is ranked quite low in all the polls I looked at but is highly regarded. I believe he went 23-0 last year while red shirting.

I think Alex will place and should be in the finals.

Good idea OB!. Nick Sulzer is a two time All-American at 165 after a stellar highschool career in Ohio. Jordan Leen who works out with him daily at Virginia indicated in an interview recently he was having a hard time finding a way to take Sulzer down in practice and that he was progressively getting better. Alex will have more offense but it is the first time we will have seen him up a weight and it will be a good measure of how he will fare this year. Objectively, this is a weaker weight IMO than Alex had last year at 157 and I think the weight will be better for Alex who could have gone 174 this year and still had to cut some weight. I am looking for a relatively low scoring match due to Sulzer's defense but I expect Alex to win by 3-4 points.

I think we will find out this weekend how the jump up will go. I personally think he will excel. There were times last year when another weigh in was coming he seemed to struggle. This year I think he will be able to muscle some people and have a full throttle motor. I doubt storley comes down and I think Bo Jordan will be right in the mix to finish top 4.

I agree with you and April about Storley not coming down but frankly he does not worry me as much as Bo Jordan who is a more complete wrestler than Storley. Jordan is young but very talented and might give Alex a better match. I really do not see Alex losing this year but if he did he would be to someone like Jordan.

I'm always a fan of good wrestling talk no matter what board it's on, good topic OrangeBomber. I personally think Alex will be the best wrestler at this weight class, but it is going to be a dog fight for sure.

I think Nick Moore will be tough as ever, i mean he did beat caldwell last year and gave him a run the year before in the duals, and he beat nearly every ranked wrestler last year except Taylor and Monk and then tanked at NCAA's which hopefully will not occur this year. This is a match i am very excited for and i think Moore will give Dieringer a tougher match than most are expecting.

Also Dylan Palacio is quite talented as is Isaac Jordan, i think Jordan was just as good as Dieringer last year or at least on the same level of elite 157's, as he did beat DSJ (something Alex never did) and and Green. His only losses were to Ian Miller and a red hot James Green on the backside and the way it shook out he took 7th. He'll be a tough match for any top 165.

Then theres his cousin Bo over at Ohio State who i expect to be in this top level of 165's. He had an undefeated redshirt year, and in most cases that is indicative of some success.

I don't think Harger will give much trouble to Dieringer or any of the title contenders, because all that i know is Moore handled Harger on more than one occasion last year.

Then rounding out the contenders is Sulzer and Moreno who are both extremely tough in their own right. I think Sulzer would be the tougher of the two for Dieringer, but i expect him to win both.

Overall this will be one of my favorite weight classes this year as its shaping up to be an exciting one filled with a lot of talented guys. Is it november yet?
