This is a great piece. You can see statistically K's rotations. Among the power 5 conferences, since 2000, only Wisconsin has used a shorter bench than Duke.

I also think that as you look back over the years at teams in the 80's, some in the 90's, K has gradually had a shorter bench. Interestingly he's had a 9 man rotation several times. Never a 10 man rotation use - measured by a player getting 20% of PT over the course of a season (though 61 of 65 power 5 conference teams have).

The guy that wrote that is majoring in statistical science, yet the X-axis and overall format are not very effective. He is trying to be unique, but that's not what a stats person should be interested in. The article is solid nonetheless. Good read.

Interesting stuff. Shouldn’t really surprise anyone. What is crazy is that Wisconsin traditionally plays at one of the slowest paces in the country, makes sense for them to not play a lot of guys because the players playing aren’t exerting near as much energy running up and down the floor.

Duke traditionally plays at a much faster pace.

That’s the troublesome part. The Bob Knight “play the best 7” works in the tourney when games are typically slower, and your 7 are dead tired. You can see the fade in some of these iterations the past few years at Duke.

What can attributed to that some is inexperience. The freshmen don’t typically hold up as well during those stretches as the juniors and seniors do.

This team has 10 guys and a Joey Baker who have all seen significant time on the floor (6), or are high profile freshmen (4). And Joey Baker will absolutely be in line for some tick this season. I’m not saying K will play 11 regularly, but at some point all 11 scholly players will play important minutes in games. That’s the essence of a deep bench.
