I think the headline is clickbait and the article is poorly written. The first paragraph says he died after a long illness. Then this below.

“He was rehearsing for a show to do in Los Angeles with a full band,” Nash stated. “After three days of rehearsals, he felt a little sick. And he’d already had COVID and he had COVID again. And so he went home and decided that he would take a nap, and he never woke up. But he died in his bed and that is fantastic.

Was he rehearsing with the band while suffering with COVID? Seems odd.

This reads to me that he recovered from a second bout of COVID. Or maybe COVID was the "long illness"?

Crosby had a liver transplant 30 years ago. IDK, but I would imagine if he continued abusing drugs post transplant he wouldn't have survived as long as he did.
And at 81, if he was still hanging with hos, god bless him. He would have been in pretty good shape.
