I think Rubin is more of a classical liberal. It's arbitrary how you define things but I'd call this a split on the left between liberals (like Rubin) and progressives.

Rubin definitely has traditional liberal values. That is why he is so upset. He sees the modern "progressives" moving the party away from traditional liberal values of free speech, religious liberty, etc.
