Coming out of the timeout, Akot, Queiroz, Brooks, Kelly and Harpring stay in the game. Will that be our closers today?

40-40 at the half on a closing three from the Wildcats.

conceding 40 in a half is no bueno, and the problem is open threes and too many fouls giving charity points.

Davidson is 5-8 on threes, 7-10 on FTs

We are +5 on off rebounds, +9 in 2nd chance points, even on TOs, so in total we are +7 on shots taken, That is a good recipe for winning. But we have conceded 52% FGs to Davidson. Easy shots have negated decent overall basketball.
I am not worried. This is there first scrimmage. The team is relatively new with a lot of new players. This is expected for the first scrimmage. They will get better as they continue to play with one another. Also, this scrimmage does not count; therefore, win or lose is not the main point. This game is design to so areas of strength, weakness, and areas that need fixing and improving.

Harpring subbed out 4:44 left in Q3, has not yet returned. so benched for 7 minutes and counting
I am not worried about that right now. I think CB and staff are trying to get Harpring to settle down. If I had to guess, I think she is pressing too much. She has to the game come to her. Besides this is her first college game. She is a freshman after all. It is going to take her some time to adjust to the college level game. I expect her to get better and figure things out each time she plays; watches film to see her mistakes that were made, etc.

Heels Win! 76-66

Akot is my player of the game with a double/double, and a massive +/- differential. Need better efficiency from out PGs.

Thanks for sharing and for the insights. I think the PG's efficiency will get better moving forward. We must remember RK played very little last year because of injury. She is rusted and she is trying to get her timing and rhythm back. This is Kate's first game playing college basketball. Chloe C. did not play at all today. Once they look at film and point out all of the mistakes they were made, etc. I think we should see some improvement in those areas the next scrimmage against Maryland.

Taissa has played the entire second half. And I think Reniya, too.
Bigs in this game:

Queiroz 30
Akot: 26
Thomas: 6
Bofia: 4

Add together the minutes of the bottom three and there were a few minutes where where Queiroz played the 5 and Hull played the 4. This will obviously change when we play Toomey, but interesting.

Reniya anchored the 2, with 34 min leading the team. For Harpring (25 min) and White (19 min) is was pretty much an either/or with one usually subbing for the other. They only played together in the rare minutes where Kelly rested.

Any intel on Toomey
Banghart said in the pre game interview with the radio broadcast that Toomey and Burrows were held out just as a precautionary measure. She also said other player(s) would be on minutes restriction, which probably was Clardy who was suited up but DNP.

Coach CB said in post game that the style Davidson played was very foreign to what most schools play and was not something they had been practicing for. CB also said they were very well coached and a good team.

8 3point baskets was good but hopefully below our average game for this team. IMO I am hoping we will average around 10 or better. We were at our best last season when we had big 3pt shooting games.

Burrows, Clardy and even Toomey can shoot the 3 well. It appears JMO Brooks, Teissa Q, Kelly and Kate can all shoot it well.

Make 3's, Make layups, shoot free throws better as a team and shoot FT's great as players on the court late game.

We missed Toomey's rebounding to go with Akot's.

Today is Brad Daugherty's Birthday. He played with MJ, Sam Perkins, Kenny Smith, etc. He was coached by Dean Smith. This is what he says about shooting and making FT's which is what I believe as well. I never think about missing a free throw. All that goes through my mind when I’m at the line is seeing the ball go through the bottom of the net. This a mental thing. As I stated before. The players on this team have played a ton of basketball from the time they were little to now. My question is, How did that make the FT's when they played in high school. I am sure that made them when they played because they were the focal point on their team and I am sure that got fouled a lot.

This team must make their FT's this year, bottom line; especially when we are playing top level teams. This is how games are won and lost when you play UCONN, SC, LSU, Duke, ND, Louisville, Oklahoma, etc. No excuses.

Got to admit. I did not expect this team to struggle that much with Davidson.

Was a well organized team that knew exactly what they wanted to do and did not stray from that. I was sitting very near their bench and if you saw or heard their coach during this game they were treating it like a tournament game. We were playing a lot of new lineups and testing stuff untill in the second half when CB just went to her security bklanket and decided to go all out on defense. This team is going to take some time no doubt.

This team is relatively new. You have four transfers and two freshman. Then you add in the returning players. This is not a surprise unc80 once you understand the facts. Let me break down to you. Toomey did not play she was a starter last year. RK played hurt all of last season; therefore, she play a little bit last year, Hull started this game. Did Hull ever start last year? BT was hurt most of last year, so she played little to no minutes last year. There is rust with RK and BT. Kate is new and a freshman that started. Akot is new to the program. There was no Sophia B, no Chloe C, and no CT. Gabby is new. So the players that did play in this game and that did start from last year was NB and LH. Remember both NB and LH game off of the bench. Davidson is a junior / senior lead team. The chemistry is already there; where as for us, the players that played are still figuring out the chemistry, rhythm, timing, and connectivity. This was their first game playing together with a lot of new parts. To beat Davidson by 10 with all the newness should tell you something. They are going to get better each time they play against other teams. I do not think you listen to the post game after the win against Davidson because if you did then CB and the two players that they interview said the exact thing that I stated above. Just relax UNC80, Rome was not built in a day. They will get better when they play Maryland this coming Saturday. This scrimmages are good for them because weakness will be exposed before they play their first real game against Oklahoma. Go Heels!

Are we improving as a program or is Davidson that strong? I didn’t expect this either.

Davidson had an NETof 73 last year. That would put them maybe 11th or so in the ACC.

Davidson is not a typical overmatched mid-major. We played them in Carmichael in the regular season in 2023 and we won 74-70. That game was really tight.

https://goheels.com/news/2023/11/12/womens-basketball-wbb-pulls-out-win-over-davidson

They are really well coached and play a very different style than you are normally going to see. It wasn't going to be blowout like you see with other mid-majors in the early season. Also, we didn't play good defense in the first quarter. We outscored them by 16 or so I think after the first quarter. If we played defense in the first quarter like the other three, it may have been a 20+ win. And we didn't play Toomey, Burrows, or Clardy.

Davidson plays a unique 5-out approach. They're a good program that typically plays every P4 team within 10 points.

Last year vs P4's:
-@ MS State L by 9
-Miami L by 8
-NC State L by 8
-#7 Baylor L by 2 in OT

Year prior:
-@ WF L by 5
-@ #22 State L by 2

Pair that also with the fact we did not have 3 of our likely top 7 players for the season and left about 15-20 points from just not finishing around the rim. We will be fine and a very good team by the end of the season.

I do not see why some people are panicking. This was our first scrimmage with a lot of new parts. We had three people who are likely our top 7 players for the upcoming season sit out for this game. Davidson is not one of those push over mid major teams as someone has already stated. It is going to take time for our players to gel, find their connectivity, rhythm, etc. People just need to relax. You are not going to blow everyone out. Did they not win the game? Did they not learn what some of their weaknesses are moving forward? Did Davidson show us a different style of play where you have 5 players out which forces you to make adjustment on the defensive side of the ball? The answers to all of these questions is yes. This is the main reason why CB and Staff choose to scrimmage Davidson.
