Davis' Home Run Leads WVU in 10 Innings[/B]

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 6, 2015) - [/B]Freshman designated hitter Kyle Davis hit his first career home run to lead off the 10th inning as the West Virginia University baseball team won 7-6 at ETSU on Friday evening at Thomas Stadium.

West Virginia (5-6) smacked a season-high 16 hits with no errors in the victory, while also coming back from a three-run deficit. ETSU (7-4) scored six runs on 12 hits with one error.

"It was a good offensive day," coach Randy Mazey said. "Our guys stood in their pretty well and got a lot of hits off a guy who hadn't given up a lot of hits. Hopefully that will carryover to tomorrow."

Davis' solo blast to left field was on the first pitch of the 10th inning after ETSU sent the game into extra innings in the bottom of the ninth.

"They've been messing with me because I've hit a few off the wall," Davis said. "I thought that was off the wall because it hit something and came back in. Anything I can do to help the team. It feels great."

The Bucs had a chance to tie the game again in the bottom of the 10th, loading the bases with one out, but a pop up and a fielder's choice ended the game.

Tied 5-5 entering the ninth inning, both teams scored a run to send the game to extra innings at 6-6.

Senior shortstop Taylor Munden singled through the left side to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a throwing error. Munden moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior third baseman Justin Fox and scored to give WVU a 6-5 lead on a single to left field by senior left fielder Brad Johnson.

Hagen Owenby scored the game-tying run for ETSU in the bottom of the ninth after doubling to left field to lead off. Owenby was sacrificed to third base and scored on a single to center field by Robby McCabe.

Davis and Johnson each had three hits for the Mountaineers, and Munden extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Davis also scored two runs and sophomore first baseman Jackson Cramer drove in two.

Junior right-hander Blake Smith (2-0) picked up the win for the Mountaineers. Smith pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

"There wasn't anybody else in the bullpen," Mazey said. "He was either going to win it, save it or lose it. He was finishing that game one way or the other."

West Virginia used a two-out rally to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Following a single up the middle by Johnson, Cramer smacked an opposite field home run over the left field fence. The homer was the third of the season for Cramer.

ETSU used three runs in the third inning and two runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 5-2. Kevin Phillips hit a two-run homer in the third to put the Bucs ahead 3-2 and then Daniel Tucker scored on a passed ball and Chris Cook hit an RBI single up the middle in the fourth.

Junior center fielder KC Huth led off the fifth inning for WVU with a double to right center field and scored on a single into left field by Fox to cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Mountaineers tied the score at 5-5 in the top of the sixth when Davis singled to lead off the frame and senior catcher Cam O'Brien doubled off the top of the fence to advance Davis to third with no outs. Sophomore right fielder Shaun Wood had an RBI ground out to second base and Huth hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Davis and O'Brien, respectively.

A no-decision went to WVU freshman right-hander BJ Myers (0-1), who allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 3.2 innings.

Freshman right-hander Conner Dotson (0-1) pitched brilliantly in relief of Myers, pitching four shutout innings, giving up three hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

West Virginia and ETSU return to action on Saturday at 2:05 p.m. The Mountaineers will send junior left-hander Ross Vance (1-1) to the mound and he will face ETSU right-hander Lee Haeberle (2-1).
