The good:
I think the team really settled in once we got points on the board. After that gift for our first TD (which still feels a bit cheap). I think the guys calmed down and started commanding the game. Bringing it back to a tie and subsequently getting the win.
This started with the special teams play and defense. The special teams has been the most consistent unit for this team. Return TD’s, good coverage, good kicking. That didn’t change yesterday.
The defense has been solid as well. Getting key stops when needed and only giving up 20 points yesterday. I believe they are averaging 17 pts allowed.
Eventually the offense followed suit. Brohm knew he wasn’t going to run the ball with Pitt’s game plan and a battered RB room. So he put the game on the shoulders (specifically the right one) of Miller Moss. Moss favored Chris Bell and Bell was the workhorse that brought us back in the game. We need Bell to continue that consistency.
The bad:
Offensive line play has been consistently underwhelming. We aren’t blocking the run well enough to open up holes and we can’t rely on our backs to make big plays when they are injured. I think the OL was better when pass blocking the 4-man rush (naturally) but they need to figure out how to handle the blitz.
The ugly:
This was the ugliest first quarter I’ve seen Louisville play in a while. Slow starts have been the M.O. for this team, and that has to change as we face better competition for the remainder of the year.
