Was watching a replay of Pirates Classics (when they were actually good and management cared) and the Gunner mentioned that announcer Dave Giusti was unavailable as he was "attending a seminar for his full time job with American Express." Before salaries got astronomical these guys (professional athletes across all sports) had to augment their income as they weren't paid enough to take the off season off; I never behoove anyone what they make but I wonder what players these days would do if they had to get a 2nd job to make ends meet.

way back in early 70s my parents were looking to have an addition put on back of house and one of the people who came and looked was a Philadelphia Eagle player, a line man, masonry was his off season job.

We probably wouldn't have real professional sports given the known long term health risks especially with football.

It's crazy to think how much some of these guys are paid (especially the NBA) but I do think it's great they no longer need a second job. Ideally no one would but that's a different discussion.
