Pola Gates has the athleticism, but he’s really undersized right now I think.
Farmer and Wright have the size.
Newsome may also need to add some pounds.
If those guys can be ready to contribute right away (learning playbook/physically hold their own) then we just got a lot better and deeper.

I dunno, I saw Pola-Gates during their run last week and he was looking extremely muscular and somewhat bigger. That, by the way, is true of the whole team. Even Wandale Robinson looks more defined right now. Whatever they have those guys eating and lifting, its working. They look much more like a team that could physically take on Michigan from last year.

Which, if the Cleveland.com picks are to be taken seriously, we will have to do in the Big Ten Championship Game. They picked Michigan as 1st in the East and winning the championship, and Nebraska as 1st in the West and losing to Michigan.

Coach Fisher was very complimentary to most of the DB on sports nightly last night. Interview was definitely done before stovall and dismuke had their incident

Context: Its like blaming someone who says the 4th of july isnt here yet, and only is right once a year.
Its depends when it's said.

I agree, I always thought Gates looked thin, but then I saw him walking on campus and I was surprised with his size.

When was the last time we had the same DBs coach for more than one season?

I think Riley had four in three years?

Bo had a new one every single year after Marvin Sanders left?

Since Marvin left after the 2010 season, NU has had six DB coaches, seven if you count Elliot (RIP) over eight seasons. Stewart (Riley) and Joseph (Bo) coached two seasons, Donte, Warren and Raymond coached one. Fish will be in his second season. Dismuke, Lee, Lamar and Bootle have had three DB coaches.
Tons of turnover in terms of coaching the position for many years. Fisher is the best NU has had since Marvin. Elliot was a Yoda in terms of the DBs but was sick and wasn't around long.

If Noa Pola-Gates is anything like his uncle is at Safety, we will have very good one for years to come. Noa definitely comes from football blood lines. Troy was as elite as they come, then Noa has cousins that are or have done well, too. With our S&C and our dietitian, I have no worries about getting Pola-Gates and Farmer getting to 200-215 pounds, and seeing how Noa’s uncle is...he’s definitely got the body type to get that big, if not bigger.

Edited: just FYI, Troy Polamalu was a mere 3 star RB that was ranked 44th in the RB position and ended up being one of the best DBs to come through USC. It’s amazing isn’t it? ;)

That is a big high school thing though, most coaches will put their best players on offense first...

Years ago, you basically became the starting QB if you had the biggest hands...that way you didn't F up the snap and all you did was turn around and hand off.

I will argue that HS offenses are and have been ahead of college (and pro to a lesser extent) for a long time...HS coaches tend to make it simple...if you are a good athlete we should put the ball in your hands all the time...so you get to be the QB and we will design plays for you...

I would love to see that… Give our boys a chance to redeem themselves against Michigan. It still rankles me that Winovich said our kids quit. And while that was true last year to an extent, I don’t see us quitting ever again under Frost.

Polamalu sure played bigger than 5’10” and 207. After reading your post I had to check. I though for sure he was 6’1” or 2” and 215 -220. I had thought Noa was a tad undersized to play safety but this opened eyes.

I actually had my post made up before I went and got the link. I thought Troy was closer to 210-215 area too. But Noa Pola-Gates right now might be a tad light but he’s definitely got the frame to hit 200-210 area, easily. But I thought it was cute the way you said you thought you’d see 215-220 range, not sure if you meant Troy or Noa there? And he plays very aggressively and will lay the wood just like his uncle. Dude can HIT.

Edited: there’s definitely a reason why Noa Pola-Gates was a player dam near in the top 100 on Rivals, 24/7 and ESPN and had Alabama, USC and all the top programs after him. Heck you can watch his film while he played in the All American Bowl and you can see how he did against the 5 and 4 star players he’s matched up against. Definitely a baller like his Uncle Troy. Huskers got a GREAT one...GBR.

Thanks. The rumor was that Elliot was 100% necessary to teach Diaco's defense. I believe the second year under Riley we had Mark Banker coaching the safeties... so we can add him to the list as well.

One thing I learned from my days playing, there are guys that just love to hit, and regardless of their size, they'll smack anyone. Whether he's 195 or 215, guys that love contact and laying the wood to people do it. Likewise, if a guy is not a big hitter, he may seem to "play below his weight" to people who correlate size with ability to hit.

Exactly, perfect example (and I mean no disrespect because he’s one of the better CBs in the BIG now that he’s turned the corner) is Lamar Jackson that is 6’3 and weighs 215 pounds or more. You’d assume he’d knock your head off....NOPE. Tackling is the one area he’s still working on. Like you said, you can weigh 190 or 200 pounds and lay the wood with the best of them. Look at players like Ronnie Lott, Bob Sanders and Troy Polamalu. All guys that where barely 200 pounds...and I bet my house most NFL WRs or RBs would say those two guys are the last people they want to meet on a head in collusion running head on with.
