Defending the 3

This is an issue and I'm sure Pikiell and staff are stressing to get out on the other team. I didn't watch the game, as I'm in SoCal and was busy running around. But I did have the score updates on my phone. Do you know if Pikiell went to a zone at all? Sometimes a zone will force our guards further out to contest three point shots. I know from the stats that the Sea Wolves hit nearly 45% of their threes. That is not good. We need to tighten that up going into the B1G schedule.

We play tight defense inside with big men - that will actually benefit us when the B1G schedule starts, that's the bread and butter is big guys inside. Will there be teams that shoot 3's like crazy, yes (see: wisconsin). But like someone said, live and die by it. Also, we hit a bunch too tonight. Right at the beginning of the game and a few down the stretch that were nice. Sometimes teams get hot for one reason or another. We had hands in their face, they weren't afraid to shoot contested ones and ones from nearly half court, tells me they are a good 3 shooting team and they know it. I still like guarding the inside, cuz when the shots stopped falling, we pulled it out. Great job by coaches.

Rutgers played man to man all game an so did Stony Brook for most of the game.Stony Brook ran a nice offense with a lot of motion and dribble drive which left shooters wide open for the 3 point shot.

The bottom line is that the 3 point shot is a equalizer in college basketball where a team like Stony Brook can almost defeat a B1G team.

We actually did zone them up a little bit after a couple of time outs, just to mix it up and confuse them, but it was short-lived the 2 or 3 times we did it.

Saw Beilein's Michigan team give UCLA a go in the first half--at one point they were shooting 73% from 3. There are other B1G teams that shoot the 3 well.

This year, we either defend the 3, or be able to shoot the 3. That is how we get to 16 wins. If neither happens, we are 12-13 win team.

It starts with the right defender who is aware and who is not sagging constantly. Our best defenders always will see the floor. Pikiell has said mentioned something along those lines.

Don't agree that the three(3) can't be defended, or curtailed. But, you have to do some homework, shooters love certain points on the court, know who you are playing against, know where their favorite shooting areas are, know how they pic for space, and by who. These things can be learned and defended, it's not easy, but it's teachable. If we can make them adjust their individual preference, and or the shot itself, we can make percentages go way down.

Actually, they were one of the worst three point shooting teams in the country coming into the game.

Also watched Michigan - UCLA. As good as Michigan was from the 3 in the first half, they were terrible in the second half. I believe heard the announcers say they were 2-10 in the second half (20%). Best 3 point team I've seen in the B1G is Indiana. When they get hot, it's lights out, especially at Assembly Hall.
