I don’t know all the “new” x’s and o’s but I know this

Small and fast is going to be better than small and slow. Or big and slow for that matter. ;););)

When he was at Miami before the NCG in the OB against Nebraska, Howard Schnellenberger was asked how he would deal with the massive Husker O-Line. He said “bulk can only beat you if they can lean on you. If they don’t know where to lean, they lose that advantage”. I think that will be the goal of UofL defense Monday night. We’ll see

That’s why, at that time, he said he didn’t want any OLs over 280. And liked converting DLs to OLs.

He wanted agile, hostile, and MOBILE.

What other notable schools employs this type of defense with undersized linemen and are successful. Any examples?

How about Houston, TCU and Oklahoma State. Oh, and in the ACC I’d go with UVA. Also in the SEC Vandy does a pretty good job with smaller DLs although they aren’t a powerhouse by any means but they are often times competitive with much larger and better schools.

This thread reminds me of blubber and that took me to a memory from last year. The kid on O-line that couldn’t run off & on the field? What was his name?

OSU has a terrible defense. They have to outscore people to win.

Well pick your poison. Talent gaps create odd bedfellows.

I guess that’s what I’m getting at. Are we in this situation because of what we were left or is this by design for the future? Are we always planning to have undersized, fast DL and LB’s?

The young d-lineman Dumervil-Jean is who I think you are remembering.

Expect us to recruit a fast, athletic defense. We are too small right now and lack the depth (especially d line) for what they want to do. Uneven recruiting by Petrino has created this depth issue.

I know that Appy State has a defense that you would think was a wasp nest, they fly around and swarm the ball. Smaller, but fast and vicious. So it is by design.

(In my mind I would like to have a bunch of Elvis Dumervils with Napoleon syndrome)

IMO the roster that they inherited "accidentally fit" SOME of their needs by moving some players around and they filled some of the holes with JV players. I think we'll see an improvement in the next two years with recruiting and culture change.

Lol. Accidentally. That’s a great description because there was little thought put into recruiting by the previous staff.

I understand that young Mr. Dumerevil-Jean has health issues. He probably should never have been recruited by THE UofL. It is also my understanding that he is not going to play football for a year to concentrate on his physical well being. Good luck to this young man.

No, I remember an O-line dude that literally used a ton of clock coming & going. I’ll go hunting for name. Because I recall thinking what the he!! Bobby, that’s not your O typical guy.

When this defense is executed it creates a lot of tackles for loss and turnovers. Shooting gaps, slanting and multiple blitz packages. While it aggressive they focus on maintaining their gaps. A guy missing his gap then starting chasing. On the back end they try to keep people from going over the top. This defensive scheme is similar to a pressing basketball team.

I like this scheme in college especially if it is simple and taught properly. Cincy/TCU are good examples. Louisville is similar to App St they aren’t going to get enough talented big guys to run a 4-3. There are a ton of really good athletes with speed that fit this scheme.
